Legion of Mary: The Legion of Mary would like to request donations of Catholic magazines, these can be left at the back of the church. BRAY CUALANN HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Last Monday week as part of the 2018 Bray St Patrick’s Festival, Brian White, chairman of thr Bray Cualann Historical Society, the local history society for Bray and North Wicklow, led a historical walking tour of Bray which traced Bray’s links with shamrock, serpents, patriotic visitors and events that occurred in Bray during St Patrick’s Week since St Patrick’s Day was made a public holiday in 1903. Assembling at the Town Hall, the tour started at St Patrick’s School and its connection­s to the Shamrock Fund, and the Shamrock League. Brian also spoke about Bray parish priest Fr Richard Colahan, who died in London on March 18, 1922, and his brother, Howth parish priest Fr James Colahan, who died at St Cronan’s on the Main Street on March 18, 1918. The group was shown the HQ of the Bray Branch of the Irish National Foresters. Brian then recalled how in March 1961 barmen in Bray voted to open the pubs on Sunday Hours on St Patrick’s Day. Lower down Main Street the group were shown where Thomas Lipton had his store in Bray. Thomas Lipton was a keen yachtsman and built four yachts each named ‘Shamrock.’ The group was shown the Solus tower as Solus opened on St Patrick’s Day 1935, To the question – What is the only street in Bray would you find shamrocks on the lamp posts? which Brian revealed as Dargan Street. The tour concluded by recalling Daniel O’Connell visit to Bray.

Last Friday James Scannell presented his talk looking back at ‘Easter 1918 in Bray’ at 11.30 a.m. in Bray Library, Eglinton Road, Bray.

Tomorrow (Thursday) James will present his lecture ‘Easter 1943 in Bray, Co. Wicklow’ at 11.30 a.m. in Ballywaltr­im Library.

The April monthly lecture will take place on Thursday, April 19, at 8 p.m. in the Royal Hotel, Main Street, Bray, Co. Wicklow at which Damien Burke, Irish Jesuit Archive, will present ‘Fr William Doyle (Woodbine Willie)’ to the Bray Cualann Historical Society in the Royal Hotel. Admission €5.

STEAMING THROUGH

On Easter Monday the Railway Preservati­on Society of Ireland will operate a one-day ‘Easter Express’ steam train trip from Dublin Connolly to Wicklow Town, departing from Dublin Connolly at 10.35 p.m. and returning to Dublin at 4.35 p.m. Tickets are €20 Adults and €14 for a child (includes an Easter egg) and can be booked online from streamtrai­nsireland.com or obtained over the counter in Marks Models, Hawkins Street, Dublin 2. The society will operate a ‘Greystones Shuttle’ steam train trip from Wicklow to Greystones and return, departing from Wicklow at 12.40 p.m. and arriving back by 1.55 p.m. Tickets for this trip are €14 for adults and €8 for children, and can be booked online or obtained over the counter from Track One, Fitzwillia­m Square, Wicklow. The society will also operate an ‘Arklow Shuttle’ steam train trip from Wicklow to Arklow and return, departing from Wicklow at 2.15 p.m. and arriving back by 3.55 p.m. Tickets for this trip are €14 for adults and €8 for children, and can be booked online or obtained over the counter from Track one, Fitzwillia­m Square, Wicklow. While the train will pause for a signal check in Bray on both the outward and return journeys, it should pass through Bray around 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. respective­ly for anyone who wishes to see and hear a steam locomotive hauled train.

On Sunday, April 29, the society will operate ‘The Dublin Riviera’ steam train from Dublin to Bray and return with two steam trains trips from Bray to Wicklow and return. Tickets for this trip will be on sale shortly.
