Good Friday climb called off due to muddy terrain

-

THE annual Stations of the Cross from the Queen of Peace Church to the cross at Bray Head was cancelled last Friday due to dangerous conditions.

However, some walkers decided to brave the muddy terrain and make their pilgrimage to the summit.

The Bray Churches Together tradition brings worshippers from Christian faiths together to observe the station. Previous years have seen Bray Head bathed in glorious sunshine. Fr Joseph Whelan of the Queen of Peace Church confirmed that it was decided on the morning of good Friday that the trail was too muddy, following very heavy rainfall the night before.

‘ The fear was that people could fall and hurt themselves,’ said the parish priest. ‘We will be back next year, weather permitting.’

He said that the Stations of the Cross proceeded in the church, with parishioners from all over the Bray area joining in the observation of the stations. Fr Whelan said that he is unsure if the event has ever been cancelled before, but certainly not in recent memory.
