Dunne falls away after fantastic opening in Houston
THE eighth hole at the Golf Club of Houston could cause Paul Dunne a few sleepless nights this week.
The Greystones golfer was in contention for the Houston Open - and a coveted place at tomorrow’s Masters - until a triple bogey on the eighth forced him out of the reckoning.
Dunne, 25, started off his tournament in fantastic fashion with a round of 64 - the lowest of all competitors. He followed it up on the second day with a disappointing 71 and shaved that down to 69 for round three.
It left Dunne with a fighting chance of claiming the tournament and putting himself in the frame for the Masters but then he suffered that triple bogey on hole eighth and would eventually finish tied for eighth on -13.
The Titleist sponsored star proved that his disaster on the eighth hole didn’t knock his confidence as he sunk a 45-foot bunker shot for a birdie on the 16th hole (video available on PGA Tour official website).
It will offer little solace to Dunne as he watches golf’s finest duke it out at Augusta over the next few days.
Dunne’s previous lowest round of his professional career was 66.
