Vandals on orgy of destruction at new Rathdrum fun park
April 1988
Mindless vandals went on the rampage on a partly built fun park in Rathdrum, causing extensive damage to the pitch and putt greens.
The vandals used a tractor parked on the site which they hot wired and drove indiscriminately around the site.
The bridge over the Avonmore River leading to the site had just been completed last week which gave the perpetrators easy access to the area.
Later that same night a ten tonne Heino lorry was stolen from the Waterford Co-op premises just across the road from the fun park.
The lorry contained over teen tonnes of fertilizer and was later discovered in the Templeogue area of Dublin, complete with cargo which suggests it was the work of joyriders rather than people intent on stealing the fertilizer.
