Soroptimists make charitable donations

- By MARY FOGARTY

BRAY Soroptimists presented donations recently to Open Door, Rhett Syndrome Ireland, Soroptomists Benevolent Fund, Marino Clinic and the Malawi Girls Education Fund.

Club president Anny Verwijs welcomed club members and guests to the annual presentation of cheques at Ocean restaurant on Strand Road. Anny gave special thanks to all the Bray club members who over the past year effortlessly organised the fundraising and social events.

The aim of Soroptimist members globally is to enable, empower and educate women and girls – through working with local charities allowing clubs to be involved in transforming situations for women and children sometimes through advocacy work or by volunteering to take part in projects alongside established aid agencies with the goal of enhancing women’s lives.

Anny introduced members to guests from local charities receiving cheques on the night.

Jill Roe was there from the Malawi Girls Educational Fund. This charity currently supports young women through secondary school education, including fees, books and uniforms. Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world, and features at the lowest end of international indicators of social and economic development and well-being.

Suzanne Cox and fellow board members joined Soroptimists to receive a cheque on behalf of the Open Door Day Care Centre. Over the past 34 years this wonderful facility on the Vevay Road, Bray, has provided services and activities for adults with physical disabilities, providing members with a vital social outlet and the opportunity to learn new skills in computers, art, woodwork, music and ceramics.

The Bray Soroptimist Club also supported the Marino Community Special School, Church Road Bray.

Outgoing Club President Anny also welcomed incoming Club President Clare Comerford, wishing her happiness and success throughout the year.
