NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

At the moment a lot of coaches and players are certainly getting frustrated as the weather reared its ugly head again last weekend as heavy rain on Friday put paid to a number of fixtures. Our 14’s were away to Rathnew and unfortunately suffered a heavy defeat. U p against at least the team kept plugging away and no doubt there will be better days ahead. On the day goalkeeper Ryan Clarke was the pick of the Newtown players. Our 11’s played a friendly against the WDSL under-12 girls Academy team and it was excellent game full of good football played out in glorious sunshine, yes I said sunshine.

The following are the fixtures for Thursday, April 12, to Sunday, April 15. Under-14s at home to Glencormac Utd ko Thursday at 6.45 p.m. (Interim Final second Leg); under-8s away to Ashford Rovers ko to be confirmed; under-9s away to Rathnew ko to be confirmed; under-10s at home to Greystones Utd Red ko Saturday at midday; under-11s away to Avonmore ko to be confirmed; under-12s at home to Greystones C ko Saturday at 10.45 a.m.; under-14s at home to Ashford Rovers ko Sunday at 10.30 a.m. (fixtures and ko times are subject to change)

Two players from the club celebrate their birthdays in the coming week and they are Jerard Johance from the Development Squad and Evan Fahey from the under-12s. There are also a couple of slots on all our teams at the moment so if there are any girl’s or boys who would like to join the club please contact our secretary Hughie at 087 6987653 and he will provide you with all the information you will need.

Also in a new venture by the WDSL they have started a Girls Academy for all girl’s playing in the league that will also cater for girls who may not be a member of a club or a team. Week 8 may be just the week that proved to be the ‘turning point’ in our Last Man Standing competition as from the 27 Players, who stood in week 8, no less than 23 Players bit the dust as the selections of a number of players failed to get the required win. Week nine Fixtures will be for next weekend of Saturday, April 14, to Monday, April 16, as the remaining four Players do battle for the €500 prize pot. You can follow the progress of the competition on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

The WDSL Fundraiser ‘The Kube’ took place in the Parkview Hotel last Saturday night. We have two participants namely John Dunleavy and Stephen Nolan taking part trying to win the top prize of €1,000. The lads did well with Stephen making it to the final four but he had to settle for the runners-up position as Paul Lennon from the Wicklow Advertiser took the top prize. On what was an excellent night plenty of Newtown natives and people with the ‘Ben connections’ took the Kube on for various clubs and organisations and they were Hannah Martin, Lorraine Nolan, Ger Kelly, Paddy Kelly, Aaron Hackett, Shane Synnott, Mick Synnott and Declan Carthy. Hannah won the top raffle prize of two tickets to the Electric Picnic. Well done everyone in what was a very enjoyable night. Newtown Juniors FC would like to thank everyone who sponsored, bought tickets and supported the participants on the night. It was greatly appreciated by everyone in the club.

For further information on all matters Newtown Juniors FC please contact the secretary at 087 6987653 or by email tohughienolan@gmail.com and you can also follow the club on our Facebook and Twitter pages.

PLAYGROUND CLEAN-UP

Last Saturday members of the playground committee and some volunteers spent the day cleaning up the playground. We removed weeds and cut back the hedging.

We also put up some new signs that were designed by Sean Kearns, iMagism Media, we think they look great and we hope you think so too. We collected over 3 bags of rubbish including plastic bottles, nappies, broken glass and cigarette butts.

The playground is a wonderful amenity for our town and we would just ask that everyone who uses it takes care of it. So check out the new signs on your next visit.
