Baltinglass secure ticket to Féile 2018

-

THE Wicklow Ladies Féile took place last weekend. Division 2’s round robin was completed on Saturday. Group 1 in Blessington comprised of Baltinglass, Valleymount and St Nicholas and Coolkenno while Newtown, St Patrick’s and Carnew competed in Newtown to join the winners of Group 1 in the final.

Both groups were tight affairs and Group 1 was won by Baltinglass, winning their three games albeit by tight margins.

The other group proved even tighter with the home side Newtown winning both their matches by a single point.

The stage was set for the final to be held on Sunday. However, the weather took a dramatic turn for the worse and with Ballinakill unplayable it looked like the match would have to be deferred.

However, Baltinglass made an offer to travel to Newtown for the final which was accepted and so the final was back on.

The final proved a tense affair under the watchful eye of referee Seamus Ahern.

Baltinglass took an early lead but could not shake off the Magpies. Favourites Baltinglass led at halftime by two points and stretched it out to five points during the second half.

However the never say die attitude of the Newtown girls brought them back into the game and in a welter of excitement scored three points to again bring it back to two points.

But the Baltinglass side steadied and their defence stood resolute to deservedly win the Division 2 title by the narrowest of margins on a final score of 2-02 to 1-03.

A magnificent display of good skilful sporting football by both teams and in his presentation Dominic Leech paid tribute to both sides and their management and supporters for their efforts over the two days.

The trophy was accepted on behalf of her team mates by Baltinglass captain Lia Arnold O’Brien who also thanked the Newtown side for a great game.

Baltinglass will now go on to represent Wicklow in Division 6 of the National Féile and are due to be hosted by Clan Na Gael in Louth on the weekend of June 30.
