AVONDALE

Our most recent lotto draw was in the Corner House. Numbers drawn were 5, 10, 23, and 25. There was no jackpot winner. Three match three winners. Congratulations to Eileen Kennedy, Karen and Liam Kelly and Sean Geoghegan. Next draw is in Miley’s pub on the 17th.

Miley’s seems to be a lucky pub for our jackpot winners so get your tickets....

If you’re not in you can’t win!

Thanks for all your continued support. Our Senior footballers fought out a tough game with Coolkenno Sunday morning in wet and windy conditions in Avondale, winning on a scoreline of 2-9 to 0-11.

The win came at a cost with both Simon Cullen and Aonghus O Bhriain suffering injuries. A speedy recovery wished to both the lads. The team and scorers were: Brian Burke, Simon Cullen, Shane O’Neill, Shane Beevor, Aonghus O’Bhriain, Saoirse Kearon, Paddy Kinsella, Eoin Baker, Barry Sheehan, Sean McGraynor (0-7), Shane Byrne, Liam Kinsella, Ross Ward (0-1), Ryan Cahill, Jack Manley (2-1). Subs Kevin Fitzpatrick, Eugene Dunne, Adam Benson Byrne, Seamus McGraynor, Shane Burch

Well done to all the under-7 and 9 boys and girls who played some excellent hurling in a very cold and foggy Ballinakill Saturday afternoon.

Also a big thank you to all the coaches and supporters who cheered on the guys.

Training continues every Tuesday from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

Our under-7 footballers are playing in Ashford on Friday evening. Please be there for 6.45pm.

NEWTOWN

Newtown GAA club would like to announce a new sponsor for the coming season. ABSOLUTE 47 DOT COM Clancy Group Company has kindly agreed to sponsor the club for the 2018 season.

The company is owned by local business man Liam Clancy from Springfield Heights.

Liam moved to America some years ago and is involved in a number of successful businesses. Liam and is family have been involved in Newtown GAA for a number of years and the club is delighted to have Liam and is company as our main sponsor. With so many teams to look after without this sponsorship it would be very difficult to cater for all our teams. Let’s hope the club can be as successful in the coming season as Liam has in his line of business.

Newtown had a good Senior away win against a strong Valleymount team on a scoreline of 2-12 to 0-13 last week. It’s great to get back on track after last week’s loss.

Well done to our under-14 girls who had two great victories last Saturday over St Pat’s and Carnew to reach the Division 2 Féile final.

The girls played some great football over the two games, winning both matches by a point to reach the final.

Ballinakill was closed on the Sunday for the final so our opponents Baltinglass agreed to travel to Newtown to play us.

It wasn’t a great day for football but despite that it turned out to be a cracker of a game, scores were at a premium with only three scores each.

Unfortunately when the final whistle blew we were on the wrong end of a 1-2 to 2-1 score line.

Great credit must go to the players and management for the effort they put in and it augurs well for the season ahead.

Panel on the day was, Laragh Davis, Chantelle McMahon, Katelyn O’Toole, Emma Walsh, Doireann Smyth, Rebecca Gillan, Katie Smith, Aleesha McMahon, Grace Murphy, Alicia Farrell, Alyssia Larkin, Una Power, Nicole King, Anatasja Razniak, Rachael Duffy, Tia McDonald, Hannah Martin, SophieO’ Reilly. Training is every Monday and Thursday at 7pm

Newtown GAA extend deepest sympathies to the family of Mary Synnott of Monaline who died recently.

This week’s jackpot was an even 6k as it rolled over on numbers 4, 7, 22, and 27. Lucky numbers for seven people who matched three and took home €30.

Follow us on Facebook or Twitter. There is also a club noticeboard in the local post office.

Lines are €2 each and cards are available from all footballers, hand ballers, committee members from both clubs, Christys, Sonny’s and The Little Moon.

League Roundup - We were away to Baltinglass last Saturday evening in the league. It was great to see the lads play with heart and drive and after a promising first half we found ourselves 1-4 to 0-2 ahead at half-time.

We started the second half at a slower pace than the first but fighting back and producing a thrilling end, the match finished a draw Coolboy 2-7 to Baltinglass 1-10.

Thank you once again to our supporters who travelled to cheer on the lads. We welcome Hollywood this Thursday evening, April 19, at 7.15pm in the field.

ÉIRE ÓG GREYSTONES

Sunday morning was anything but bright and fair and the lark definitely did not sing in the sky as our seniors travelled to Annacurra to play the locals in the Arklow Bay Hotel Div.1A league game.

Instead, a pessimism-generating grey sky was bestowing at intervals from its aqueous bounty most unwelcome showers.

Underfoot conditions were certainly not conducive to fast open football and one would have anticipated a dour hour of football in which victory would have been described as “ground out”.

However this proved to be far from the case and spectators were treated to a relatively high-scoring (23 scores in all) and sporting game with little difference on the scoreboard between the teams throughout the hour and to a very exciting denouement. Unfortunately Éire Óg lost 1-10 to 0-12

The Éire Óg lads initially showed little signs of travel weariness and were 1st on the scoreboard. By the 16th minute they were 0-5 to 0-2 ahead. Frustratingly at that point their shooting boots deserted them and they squandered a no. of scoreable chances and the half ended with the teams level at 0-5 apiece.

The second half began inauspiciously for Éire Óg and they were soon four points in arrears. Annacurra were quickly out of the traps and were a point ahead ere the sound of the whistle had faded.

This they followed a few minutes later with a well-worked goal.

The initiative then swung the Clocha Liatha way and they added three points which left them only a point behind entering the last quarter.

But as is the wont of the pendulum it again swung in the other direction and Annacurra went into a three-point lead. Eight minutes left and the ball finds itself in the Éire Óg court and they nail-bitingly begin to reduce the hosts’ lead and achieve equality on entering injury time which unfortunately was of sufficient duration for Annacurra to score the winning point.

PEIL NA MBAN - The weather in Ireland because of its variety and changeability (a luxury not enjoyed by those in continental climes) is always a default topic for its inhabitants.

However this cannot be said of the weather over the last few weeks which has been unremittingly dull, damp and dreary.

And so it was for our under--14 girls who, on Wednesday evening, undertook the long journey to the other end of the county to play Carnew on their own sod.

In fact the conditions were so miserable that the Éire Óg camp was a little surprised at the match going ahead.

It was a tribute to the squad’s dedication that 21 players travelled. The 3-6 to 2-1 win helped to take some of the tedium from the homeward journey.

The going, as they say in the horse industry, was heavy but at the same time was surprisingly good after all the rain. At the half way stage Éire Óg led 2-6 to 0-1. Comparison with the final score shows that the second half was much more closely fought than the first.

Abbie Smullen, who besides being the top scorer with a tally of 1-5, came away with the proud boast of having a 100 per cent return on shots taken. Aisling Roche scored 1-1 and Eva Roche chipped in with a goal.

Training for under-12, under-14 and under-16 takes place on Thursdays at 6.30 p.m. and that for seniors at 7.30 p.m. This week the under-12s are at home to Arklow on Tuesday while the under-16s play host to Rathnew on Thursday.

COMHGAIRDEACHAS to the Northern Gaels under-14 hurlers who, by winning the inter-club blitz in Bray Emmets grounds on Saturday, earned the privilege of participating in the hurling Féile in Ros Comáin on June 8.

With no hurling-feeder secondary school in this area it is difficult to embed the sport in N.E. Wicklow so single-club juvenile hurling teams have as yet not become a reality and the Northern Gaels have been formed to provide a competitive outlet for young hurling enthusiasts for Kilcoole, Éire Óg and Newcastle.

Well done to mentors Diarmuid Potts, Karl Cooke and Pappy Frawley.
