WICKLOW LIMERICK 4-10 2-12

WICKLOW took on Limerick in a challenge match at the official opening of Ballymanus GAA Club’s football field last Sunday evening as John Evans continues his preparations for the big Leinster championship clash with Offaly in early May.

The Wicklow team were led out and captained by local man Mark Kenny who went on to have an excellent game.

Unfortunately, Wicklow didn’t get off to the quickest of starts and found themselves 2-3 to a point down after 12 minutes, but they showed some bright moves and pulled a few points back.

Some say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, well James Stafford was a prime example of this today.

He just did what he does best, pointing off the right foot, trademark goal boxed into the net, the one-handed catch in the middle of the field, sending over a monster point from 40 yards off the left peg, and, to finish his day off, volleying his second goal into the net.

Wicklow made many changes throughout the game and really took the game to Limerick in the second half, scoring 3-5.

Mark Kenny was tenacious for the whole game, getting four points from play of his own and working tirelessly throughout.

It was also good to see some new faces getting a run out: Eddie Doyle,Stephen Dillon and Cathal Magee.

Final score: Wicklow 4-10, Limerick 2-12.

Wicklow scorers: James Stafford 2-2, Seanie Furlong 1-2, Gearoid Murphy 1-0, Mark Kenny 0-4, Cathal Magee 0-1, John Mcgrath 0-1.

Team: Robert Lambert; Eoin Murtagh, Jamie Snell, Saoirse Kearon; John Crowe, Ross O’Brien, Pat Burke; James Stafford, Kevin Murphy; Cathal Magee, Darren Hayden, Eddie Doyle; Mark Kenny (C), Seanie Furlong, John McGrath. Subs used: Gearoid Murphy, Stephen Dillon, Conor Healy, Conor Byrne, PJ O’Keeffe, Theo Smyth, Dean Healy.
