One other couple made all thirteen tricks but bid a small slam contracting to make 12 tricks; a second pair bid a small slam and made their contract of twelve tricks. This deal was the best hand of the evening competition.

The winning pair were husband and wife team of Kay and Teddy Hickson. They were ahead of Una McGowran and Larry Ryan who themselves were just one point ahead of third placed partnership of Teresa Ghalaieny and Margo Mulligan. A number of players could not make it last week for one reason or another so a smaller crowd than of late played some challenging hands. The novice players showed their skill and made some experienced players wonder what they ought to have done.

The week before last The Grand Slam Bridge club was host to a competition run by the Eastern Region of the Contract Bridge Association of Ireland and the excellent tournament director was Bernadette Rowntree. Fourteen tables competed in two divisions. Seven tables restricted to novice players from many different bridge clubs in the Eastern region and seven tables for more experienced players in the intermediate class. For many of the players this was their first experience of a tournament and there was a definite fear factor in competing against unknown opponents. Each deal was dealt by computer and supplied by the CBAI. Our club was pleased to be in the frame in each section of the competition. In the novice section Betty Cassidy-Nevin and Ann Houston took third place and in the intermediate section Caroline Brown and Carmel Moore were placed third. Gary Dowling presented these players with their respective cash prizes last Wednesday when the Club returned to its normal format with the free revision with novice and beginners from 6.30 to 7.30 p.m. each Wednesday prior to the main competition.
