Kavanagh to the fore

CARNEW EMMETS KILTEGAN 5-9 1-8

THE ability to exploit the space left when playing 13-a-side helped Carnew Emmets to victory over Kiltegan in their opening Division 4 clash last Thursday evening on the Wexford border.

The home side were able to work the ball up the field and apply the finishing touches with far more finesse than the Kiltegan men who can only have themselves to blame here with a disappointing wides tally for the second half.

Carnew stalwart John Kavanagh continues his fine form by bagging 3-5 from this clash (a goal and four points from frees) and performing the role of link man and chief attacker with aplomb.

Kiltegan opened well with points from John Keogh and Jamie Nolan before Kavanagh took on the entire Kiltegan mid- dle third before finishing with a screamer of a point with three minutes on the clock.

John Keogh increased Kiltegan’s lead before the impressive Joe Hughes blazed over a fine point just before collecting Eoin Coogan’s kick out and adding another to level matters after nine minutes.

When John Kavanagh found the net for the game’s opening goal the writing was on the wall. Kiltegan were battling hard at the back and had Bryan Kearney to plough his way up the field and launch attacks but when it came to the crunch they were having trouble raising flags of any colour.

It was 3-5 to 0-7 at the break, Carnew’s other goals coming from Mikey Osborne and John Kavanagh. Kavanagh had believed he was to take a penalty for a footblock but referee Eugene Doherty indiciated that it was a free outside the square.

Maddened by this decision, Kavanagh swung the left boot at the free with such venom that the Kiltegan defence just couldn’t keep it out.

Steven Coogan managed to find the back of Robert Roche’s net five minutes into the secondhalf but that was as good as it got for the visitors as tghey proceeded to squander the majority of chances they engineered while Carnew kept up their momentum and ran out 5-9 to 1-8 winners in the end,
