Soccer action

-

Thankfully the good weather returned and a lot of the teams were in action. Pride of place went to Karl Bradshaw’s under-14s who lifted the shield title on Thursday night in Newtown. The first leg was 3-3 but the Glens edged the return leg 2-1 to capture the title.

This was a tight game from start to finish. The Glens went 1-0 up half way through the first half with a through ball which Luke Kelly ran onto and calmly put away to the back of the net. The Glens had a few more chances in the first half and Dean Bradshaw hit the post also but at the other end, John Fox brought off an amazing save just before half time to keep it 1-0 up at half time.

In the second half, Glens started brightly but as the half went on, started going back deeper and deeper and John Fox brought of another super save but with four minutes remaining, the Newtown pressure told and they got an equaliser. But the Glens are capable of rising their game and they have a never give up attitude and so it proved in the last minute when Oisin Kelly ran onto a through ball and held off three defenders to score and give them a 2-1 win on the night and (5-4 over-all) and make them shield champions after being runners-up twice in the last three seasons.

Well done lads and big thanks for the support the team had on the night. A special mention for Mikey Doyle, who was back playing on Thursday after a very difficult week for him and his family and no doubt there was a proud Daddy looking down on him from above. Well done, Mikey.

However, football will bring you back down to earth as quick as it lifts you as so was the case on Sunday as this team travelled to Greystones to play their first Premier League game which finished, Greystones Utd 4 Glencormac Utd 3. Oisin Kelly hit two and Aaron Killick got the other goal. It was not the best performance from the team as the lads looked tired from Thursdays efforts and only had one substitute to bring on. Glens trailed 1-0 down and came back to 1-1 and then went in at half time 2-1 up. After the restart, it quickly became 2-2 and then went 3-2 down but got it back to 3-3 only to give away a fourth to give Greystones a 4-3 victory.

The under-8s were at home on Saturday morning and had a big win over Greystones. There were some stand out performances in this one from Darragh McGrath, Ethan Rooney and Darragh Murray in a great squad performance against a gallant Greystones team.

The under-10s were also at home to Greystones after and the away team gained some revenge for their under-eights defeat with a 2-0 win over the Glens. This was a tight game and 0-0 at the break but some lapses in defence saw Greystones win out. Oisin Short and Oran Finnerty were the top performers.

The under-11s hosted a very strong Shillelagh team and suffered a big defeat. Both Shillelagh teams are in this lower division and are both really strong teams and it is very unfair on both teams that you see this gap in a football match but well done to the young Glens, who never gave up.

The seniors were at home to Templeogue in the league and recorded a 6-1 victory. In an edgy first half, the Glens led at the break 2-0 thanks to two fine goals by Nay Watters. Cian McGoldrick made it 3-0 after the restart but Templeogue hit back with a lovely free before Nay added two more and James Delahunty also netted. This was tighter than the result suggests and in fact the Glens defence were the stars of this game with Mark Delahunty and Cian McGoldrick superb at the back.
