Dunne does it for Ireland

-

IRELAND beat France to claim victory in the Golf Sixes thanks to Gavin Moynihan and Greystones’ Paul Dunne.

Dunne landed the winning putt to bag €100,000 for himself and Moynihan.

The Golf Sixes is part of the European Tour. It is in its second year and it pits 32 golfers - 16 teams of two - against each other. Each team represents a different nation and the total purse is €1,000,000.

Moynihan - a 23-year old from Dublin - almost doubled his career earnings for his two days’ work. He chipped a birdie in the first play-off to see Ireland edge past South Korea in the semi-final.

The pair then managed three birdies and an eagle within the space of five holes to overcome France at St. Albans.

Speaking to media shortly after being crowned champions, Moynihan said: “It’s unbelievable. It’s been a great week for both of us. To get it done today means a lot when you’re representing Ireland.

“The course set up well for us and we had fun. It was the best fun I’ve had on a golf course since turning professioal and a great few days. Our flight is in two hours so we’re not making that, so we’ll be booking a new one for tomorrow with probably a hangover!”

Dunne added: “It’s a fun event but when you have the tricolour beside your name it becomes a little bit more serious.

“We’re happy to represent Ireland well, have a nice trophy under the belt and it sets well to kick on for the rest of the season.”

Dunne is not scheduled to compete at the Rocco Forte Open in Verdura which starts tomorrow.
