INDOOR BOWLS

Kildare West Wicklow Indoor Bowling Association (KWWIBA)

Championship Finals Provide Entertainment Aplenty - The Championship finals played in the spacious Rathcoffey GAA hall on Saturday 28th April provided entertainment aplenty in the various categories. Played on a knockout basis it continues to be a very popular competition with clubs. Indeed many clubs enter multiple teams into the different categories.

Ladies Singles - Loreto Farrell from the Ardclough club and Phian Neylan from the Rathangan club went head to head in this one. Both of these ladies are top class bowlers and a classic was expected. No disappointment for the spectators as it proved to be a hard fought game. Loreto got a terrible start as her opponent after four ends had jumped into a 9/0 lead.

From thereon it was a classic contest as it was mostly score for score. Loreto just gave herself too much to do after the bad start and was defeated on a scoreline of 18/11. This make Phian the Singles champion for the second year in succession.

Ladies Pairs - This was another thrilling encounter between the Brownstown pair of Lily Higgins and Mary Stynes and the Rathmore pair of Helen Feane and Breda Fenner.

There was very little between the teams for most of the game but when Rathmore edged ahead in the last quarter to take a lead of five with only two ends to play it looked comfortable enough for them to see out the game.

A late surge by the Brownstown ladies in those last ends narrowed it down to one score and Rathmore just made it on a final score of 12/11.

Open-Pairs - Father in-law and son in-law Michael Beckett and Liam Heffernan (Kildangan) against Fintan Downey and Mark Caldwell provided the entertainment in this contest.

Level on two occasions and very little separating the sides at any time during the game it proved to be a tough battle right to the finish.

Kildangan the victors with a finishing score of 16/13.

Open-Singles - Brendan Murphy (Straffan) and Dom Kavanagh (Caragh) were the contestants in this category.

This was a great game between two very good bowlers. Dom who has been in devastating form throughout this championship was always ahead through the course of the game, albeit by only a couple of score. Brendan proved to be a formidable opponent and made it tough for Dom right to the finish. Final score 17/12 in favour of Dom.

Open-Fours - Baltinglass/Kiltegan and Caragh were the teams in opposition in this final. Although the West Wicklow side were ahead at all times in the game they never could relax especially against a team of exceptional bowlers. These top two teams produced a mighty contest and it was fitting it went down to the last bowl to decide the winners. A close call but Baltinglass/Kiltegan win the Cup on a scoreline of 13/12.

Baltinglass/Kiltegan: John Kehoe, Joey Fagan, Pat Brazil and Edward Lawrence.

Caragh: Dom Kavanagh, Martin Lynch, Denis Judge and John Joe Byrne.

Mixed-Triples - In this final Ryston found themselves up against a very experienced Kildare team.

Unfortunately it took Ryston too long to settle into the game and it wasn’t until the ninth end that they got their name on the scoresheet. Against such formidable opponents there was just no way back for them at that stage. Kildare therefore just strolled to an easy victory.

Kildare: Una Downey, Fintan Downey and Mark Caldwell.

Ryston: Michael Swan, Mervyn Molyneaux and Eileen Kelly.

BRAY BOWLS

A busy week on the rink this week with all teams in action and mixed results achieved. Our Division 4 team had a tough time out in Ierne where the grass proved problematic to all except Bob Neilson’s rink who got Bray’s solitary point. Wednesday last saw Division 6 take all 4 points on offer at home to Crumlin despite being a player short. On the same day the ladies were away to Crumlin and unfortunately they returned home pointless. All three Vets teams were in action on Thursday last with a win, a draw and a loss to report. Vets 1 took 3 points away in Rathmines against Leinster, Vets 2 got 1 point away to Crumlin where Stephen Morris was outstanding. Vets 3 drew at home to Sportslink and got 2 points. Saturday saw Division 1 take 6 points at home to Kenilworth and Division 2 got 1 point away to Clontarf. The ladies Saturday team took all 2 points at home to Dun Laoghaire. This Wednesday sees Division 6 make the trip to Kilcock to play the newest club in the league - North Kildare.and the ladies are at home to Leinster. Both Vets 1 and 2 are at home on Thursday to Dun Laoghaire and Herbert Park respectively. Vets 3 make the short trip to play our neighbours Shankill. This coming Saturday sees our ladies play away to Dun Laoghaire Golf Club and our men’s Division 2 team make the long journey north to the Ards Peninsula in Co. Down to play Ballywalter in the IBA Intermediate Cup. Finally congrats to Eoghain Brady on winning the club lotto thai week.

WICKLOW ROVERS

The senior men suffered another blow to their promotion hopes when they went down 3-2 away to Blessington last Tuesday night.

They got off to the worst possible start when they fell behind after two minutes but they showed great character to battle back to level before the break when Luke Byrne made it twelve goals for the season.

Early in the second period Mikey Delaney scored his third of the campaign when he coolly slotted home from the penalty spot to put the lads 2-1 up.

As the match progressed it looked like the lads would hold on for three very important points but disaster struck in the last ten minutes when they conceded two late goals.

On Friday night they gained three welcome points without taking to the field of play, the reason for this was their opponents Boyne Rovers were unable to field a team.

On Thursday the under 18’s moved to the top of the league after they had a good 4-2 home win over Firhouse Carmel at Whitegates.

The lads fell behind early on but battled back to go 3-1 up. The away side pulled another back to make it 3-2 but the lads settled the nerves when they added a fourth.

Stuart Cox plundered two goals to make it five for the season. Luca Rampersaud scored his fourth of the campaign with Evan Doyle getting on the scoring sheet for the first time this season.

Our 17A’s travelled to Lamberton to take on Arklow Town in the youths B shield, with the game at 3-1 in Arklow’s favour the game was brought to a premature end after fifty two minutes when an unfortunate accident resulted in Arklow player James O’Brien suffering a horrific leg injury.

Everyone at Wicklow Rovers AFC would like to wish James a speedy recovery from his injury, we all hope to see you back up and back on the playing field very soon, our thoughts are with James and we wish you the very best in your recovery.

Midweek junior action saw the under 16’s go down 5-2 to Arklow United on Tuesday night.

This game had plenty of exciting football for the watching public.

Thomas O’Neill scored his fifth of the season while Deano Doran fired home his first of the campaign.

On Wednesday the 15A’s recorded an excellent 4-1 away win over Ardmore Rovers in the DDSL, Ross Quinn moved on to nine in the scoring charts when he notched a single, a first of the season for Adam O’Reilly and seconds of the campaign for both Fionn Luddy and Conor Leonard saw the lads record a fantastic win and three valuable points.

On Thursday the 14B’s had a good 5-2 win away to Avonmore, a brace from Javier Ramiro who was introduced at half time was the turning point in this game.

Tim Hastie’s eleventh of the season, Alexander Gallet’s fifth and Tom Farrelly’s second of the campaign saw the lads over the line and return to Whitegates with three excellent points.

The 15B’s suffered a disappointing 7-0 loss away to Roundwood on Thursday night, the lads never got going in this game and never reached the improved standards they have set themselves recently.

It’s back on to the training pitch and hopefully they will be back to form for the next game.

Saturday saw the 12B’s go down narrowly 1-0 to Avonmore, the decisive goal came after ten minutes and try that the lads did they just couldn’t breach a strong Avonmore defence.

An understrength 12C’s suffered a heavy 10-3 defeat to Greystones United A, missing several players for one reason or another the lads were overpowered by the Greystones side. Ben Doyle notched two with Cian Doyle scoring his eighteenth of the season to complete their tally.

Sunday’s action saw the under 14 girls go down 7-1 away to a very good St Josephs side.

The final result even though they were the better team probably flattered the hosts a little bit as the girls created several good chances in the second half.

It definitely wasn’t as one sided as the final result might suggest. Anna Dignam and Aoife Caffrey put in a great shift in a game that saw Justine Cronin hit the twenty mark in the scoring charts after she scored Rovers consolation goal.

The 15B’s went down 6-2 away to Coolboy, the lads didn’t have a good day but Tom Flood doubled his tally for the season when he nabbed both Rovers goals.

Our under 16’s lost to Arklow United for the second time in a week when they went down 3-0 in Ferndale Park.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Due to the Bank Holiday last weekend only three of our teams saw action.

Lightening struck twice for our Under 11’s as for the second successive week they had a 4-4 draw, this time away to Wicklow Rovers White.

Jake Robertson scored two more crackers, Dayle Carthy scored his first ever goal and Jack Daly scored at the end of the game for a deserved share of the spoils.

Brooklyn Doyle was outstanding on the day alongside Cormac Chance and Dylan Dunleavy.

The Under 12’s enjoyed a good win away to Sporting Greystones to maintain their recent run of good form.

Aaron Cawley helped himself to four goals, Paudie Gammell (2) and there was one each for Keira Farrelly and Eoghan Fox.

Our 14’s have been finding it hard going on the pitch recently and they suffered another heavy defeat away to Greystones in the cup.

To be fair to some of the players they kept plugging away with Ryan Clarke excellent in the goal.

The team will probably have to drop down a division, as they are clearly not strong enough for the league they are in.
