PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
To remember Millen Varghese’s passing we have created a perpetual competition and plaque which is presented annually at Awards’ Day. The theme of this year’s competition is ‘Seasons’ and students are invited to submit their interpretations of this theme using, for example, reflections, close ups, colour and light. Please submit your entries to Mr Stack’s email oliverstack@kwetb.ie by Friday, May 11. Students may submit more than one entry. A display of entries will take place in the school the week of May 14 and the winner will be announced on Awards’ Day.
MATHS FINAL
Well done to Conor Thornber in one Erne, who represented the school on April 27 in a First year Maths Final in Oatlands College in Dublin. Conor qualified to the final round based on the results he obtained in a maths round which was held in school in early March.
DROP EVERYTHING AND READ
All first and second year students took part in a National Drop Everything and Read event on Friday, April 27. From 10.40-11.00, students were asked to stop what they were doing and read a book or an e-book which they could access on their Ipads. Students thoroughly enjoyed this activity which is also supported by our Literacy Plan in the school.
PAIRED READING
A Paired Reading Initiative started on Monday, April 23, in the library and will run for a number of weeks. This initiative will involve a number of TY students reading to first year students and, again, forms an important part of our Literacy Strategy.
WRAPPAROUND
Five of our JCSP students gave a brilliant reading of their poem ‘Heroes’ to a large crowd of over 300 people on stage at the JM Synge Theatre in Trinity College, Dublin, last Thursday week as part of the annual ‘Wrapparound’ Creative Writing Showcase. Hundreds of students from 12 other schools participated in the event performing their own songs, poems and stories.
Our students wrote their poem after participating in a series of writing workshops held in the library over the last few weeks, facilitated by writer, Dave Lordan. The aim of the event is to get students to explore their creative and artistic side through writing poems, stories and rap music.
EU AMBASSADOR AWARD
Since January, students fromTY1 have been partaking in the European Parliament Youth Ambassador Programme (EPAS). This programme aims to raise awareness among young people of the impact of the European Union on their daily lives. We are delighted to have taken part and successfully completed the programme making CCM an officially designated ‘European Parliament Ambassador School’.
The TY Youth Ambassadors would like to thank all the students and teachers who wore their jerseys for ‘Europe Jersey Day’ representing various Irish and European sports teams with great pride. They would also like to thank the fifth class students from Wicklow Educate Together National School, who also got involved in the jersey day as part of their participation in the TY Coaching Module.
This was a great opportunity to highlight Ireland’s status within the European Union and to celebrate our membership through our shared admiration of European sportsmen and sportswomen. Congratulations again to the TY students on this fantastic achievement.
PI QUIZ
Pi Quiz is a team competition for Junior Certificate Students, organised by the Cork branch of the Irish Maths Teachers’ Association. The Wicklow region held the quiz in CCM on Friday evening, April 20. The competition offers students an opportunity to practice Junior Certificate style questions in a team setting. There are eight rounds to the quiz where each round is carried out over a six minute period. Twelve teams worked through the questions and the standard of work on the evening was very high. Loreto Secondary School Bray came out with the highest score on the night, followed by St Gerard’s and a joint third by Avondale Community College, Temple Carrig Secondary School and St Mary’s College Arklow.
It was a really enjoyable evening and an interesting one to see young talent work together through problems and come up with a solution that all were happy with. Well done to all the students who participated on the night and a big thank you to their teachers for their support on the night.
CORK SCHOOL OF MUSIC
Transition Year student, Eve Cowdrey, has been selected to join a number of other students across the country to participate in a TY Orchestra Project. It is a week long, full time work experience opportunity at Cork School of music. She will participate in daily group rehearsals with a professional conductor and orchestra and will get opportunity to observe other ensembles. Well done to Eve on a fantastic achievement.
LOURDES 2018.
Congratulations to Jade Boylan and James Byrne, who have been selected to go back to Lourdes this year to work with the Dublin Diocease as White Shirts. They will join Molly Hodgkinson, Eve Gregory, Sophie Richardson and Dylan Geoghegan, who are going to be Blue Shirts.
YOUNG SOCIAL INNOVATORS
Congratulations to TY1 Young Social Innovators, who presented a cheque of €300 to the CEO of Tiglin, Phil Thompson, and Outreach Coordinator, Chris O’Reilly, last week. The students raised this money from holding a Bake Sale for teachers and students at break and lunch time. They also raised awareness of ‘Drug and Alcohol Abuse in Young People’ by devising a Just Say No slogan and T-shirt campaign. TY1 would like to thank everyone for their support.
THE BLUE CAFÉ
Well done to the students in the ASD Unit, who opened the Blue Café on Tuesday, May 8, from 11 to 12 for parents and from 1.20-2 for teachers. Thank you to all who supported this initiative while enjoying the lovely array of treats which were on offer.
SAILING SUCCESS
Congratulations to Transition Year student, Hal Fitzgerald, on finishing second in the recent schools’ regatta. Well done to Hal on a fantastic achievement.
COUNTY SOCCER
Nine students from CCM have been selected to represent the Wicklow League/County Wicklow in the under-14 Kennedy Cup soccer tournament which will take place in university of Limerick over five days in June. This is the largest schoolboy tournament of its kind with teams from all 32 affiliated FAI leagues taking part. Given that players can be selected from throughout County Wicklow, to have nine players from CCM in the squad of 20 is a great achievement. Those selected are: Seán Britchfield, Scott Devlin, Brioc Doyle, Callum Gibney, Jack Gregory, Jack Hayden-Moorehouse, Ryan O’Toole, Ethan Power, William Moorehouse.
JUNIOR FOOTBALL
The Junior Boys’ GAA footballers played their replay against Coláiste Bhríde, Carnew, in Carnew on Friday, May 20, and in a saga of missed chances, our missed chance was when we were up by 10 points in the first game.
The boys tried really hard with a depleted squad to keep in touch with a strong and much improved Carnew side. We started the brighter team and scored the first point by Toby Lee Curran against a strong breeze. We then lost our centre back, Mark Whelan, to a HIA after five minutes and Carnew started taking over the game at the 15 minute mark, putting together a series of points. Noah Sheridan scored a great goal and Dylan Kavanagh scored a point to keep us in touch at half time on a score line of 1-2 to 0-10.
Noah Sheridan scored a great goal in the second half to stop Carnew from running away with the game and kept us in touch with 40 minutes played. However, the avalanche was inevitable as our players ran out of steam and Carnew won on a score line of 2-3 to 1-18, with our captain, Ross Quinn, scoring the last point for CCM There were great performances from Paul Marah, Andrew Nolan, Charlie Cruise, Ross Quinn, Dylan Kavanagh, Shane Marah and Noah Sheridan. This team will improve over the coming years and is one to look out for at senior level.
