4,000 more people register to vote

-

THOUSANDS of additional Wicklow residents have registered to vote ahead of the Referendum on May 25.

Wicklow County Council has estimated that approximately 4,000 additional people have signed up to the supplementary register in the last few weeks. This is on top of the circa 97,000 already on the register.

‘ The franchise team in Wicklow County Council, led by Anne Marie Roberts, have done stellar work in getting so many people registered and really going out of their way to help people with information, etc,’ said Cllr Jennifer Whitmore, who has been taking part in a number of voter registration drives in north Wicklow alongside members of the gardaí and local community groups.

‘They even enabled people to scan their forms and email them to council offices on the final day. They were the first county council in the country to do so and this made a big difference to people that might have missed the closing date otherwise.

‘I am delighted to see so many people, including many first-time voters, engage with the democratic process and sign up to the register’, said Cllr Whitmore.

‘Regardless of your views on the upcoming referendum, it is really important that people get out to vote. It’s the first time in 35 years that we’ve had an opportunity for a say on this important issue.’
