PUPILS STEP BACK INTO THE PAST

-

POWERSCOURT National School in Enniskerry has begun celebrating its 200 year anniversary with a week of fun events. The celebrations began on Monday morning at the original schoolhouse located in the heart of the village, which is still being used for educational purposes. Neil Condron of the ‘Schoolhouse for Art’ invited the children down from the new school to play in the old school yard, raise celebratory bunting and release a flock of doves to mark the occasion.

The doves were delivered by Ed from the Copeswood Averies in Kilmacanogue.

Neil Horgan, a storyteller from Stepaside, came and recounted a number of educational tales while the children ate a breakfast of flapjacks.

The children and their teachers embraced the olden days by dressing accordingly. After the launch, they walked Church Hill by following the footsteps of temporary street art, to look at the small collection of images from yesteryear back to the new school. They did this in 2012 when they officially moved out of the old schoolhouse to the brand new premises.

The week’s events include the burial of a time-capsule full of modern day things, the launch of a celebratory bench made by the children of the fifth and sixth class, a school open day and a family fun day on Sunday, May 20.

This event is open to anybody who would like to come along, just bring a picnic.
