Cyclists complete Crinken 100 in aid of St Joseph’s
STAFF TAKE TO THEIR BIKES TO RAISE FUNDS FOR DEMENTIA CARE
AT 6.30 a.m. on Saturday morning, seven cyclists took to the roads of Wicklow to cycle 102km in aid of St Joseph’s, Shankill, dedicated to dementia care.
All seven team members are staff members at St Joseph’s who were going the extra mile to make a difference to those that they care for and their families.
The cyclists aimed to visit six local spots – which the new lodges in St Joseph’s are named after – in one day, namely Rathmichael, Avoca, Carrigeen, Glendalough, Kilcroney and Delgany.
The ‘Crinken 100’ challenge was held to raise funds towards special activity equipment for St Joseph’s residents to enjoy with their families.
The initiative was the idea of James Leahy and his colleagues John Murphy, Ed Keating, Robert Weglowski, David Quinn and Kirby Aranas all agreed to take part. They have all been in training over the last couple of months and were keen to get started bright and early on Saturday morning.
‘We all wanted to make a difference and there have been a few projects lately that couldn’t happen if it hadn’t been for others fundraising in our name, so we wanted to show how much our residents happiness means to us too,’ said James. ‘We also know that by raising awareness about the specialist care we give at Saint Joseph’s really helps.’
The route took cyclists from Kilmacanogue to Delgany, through Newcastle, Rathnew and Glenealy, on to Rathdrum, Avoca and Glendalough, through Lara, back to Kilmacanogue, Kilcroney, and back to Rathmichael Church.
They were joined there by other staff members and family members to cycle the last mile home.
There was a parade through the village escorted by the gardai and a new triobike for residents had its maiden voyage.
