Bray girls prove too strong for gallant St David’s outfit
LORETO BRAY ST DAVID’S 9-11 3-8
A very strong Loreto College team proved too strong for B shield winners St David’s in the Senior B girls football championship final in Bray Emmets on Wednesday.
The Bray school had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half and started well.
They had three points registered in six minutes but then a fine St David’s move produced a Rachel Purcell goal to level the scores.
This seemed to inspire the Loreto girls into stronger action and they had goals by Eleanor Carroll Hayes and Saoirse Canavan in the next two minutes.
They continued to hold the upper hand and led by 4-7 to 1-3 when referee Eddie Leonard blew for half-time.
Loreto got some early second half scores to stretch their lead but St David’s came more into the game as the second half progressed and used the wind well to get some fine scores.
However, the Loreto team were never in danger of losing their lead and ran out deserving winners. With most of this team available again next year they should make a big impression in the A championship. Players to impress on the day included goalkeeper Amy Cahill, Saoirse Canavan and Amy, Jane and Laura Butler.
The somewhat depleted St David’s side also had some fine players and battled hard to the end with Megan Healy, Katie Lawless and Rachel Purcell to the fore.
