Greystones United in running for Club of the Year honour

GREYSTONES United AFC is one of eight clubs competing for the prestigiou­s honour of the 2018 FAI Club of the Year.

The shortlist for the prize - running for the 13th year - was announced on Monday and the eight different clubs represent seven different counties with Greystones proudly flying the flag for Co. Wicklow.

Ashbourne United (Meath), Ballinaslo­e Town (Galway), Ballymacke­y (Tipperary), Broadford Rovers (Dublin), Broadford United (Limerick), Colga FC (Galway) and Gweedore Celtic (Donegal) will be the seven other clubs hoping to pip ‘Stones to the crown.

The FAI commented in their statement accompanyi­ng the shortlist that it “recognises, celebrates and promotes the inspiratio­al work by clubs around Ireland.

“Great clubs from around Ireland responded to the call of becoming FAI Club of the Year. The competitio­n provided judges with a(n) extremely difficult task to pick eight nominees.

“The judged focused on clubs who achieved excellent standards in club management, community engagement, coaching, participat­ion opportunit­ies and facilities”.

Due to their nomination, Greystones will receive a cheque for €1500 and will battle it out in the final round at the FAI Festival of Football in Cork this August.
