CCA PRIZE DAY
Coláiste Chraobh Abhann celebrated their junior and Senior Prize Day on Thursday and Friday, May 18, and 19, with academic excellence and outstanding achievement awards being presented to our student body.
Students, who were seen to have exceled in their subjects throughout the year were awarded medals of achievement by their subject teachers. Sixth year students were also awarded an overall best student award for each exam subject and were presented with an engraved plate.
The Rogha na Bliana prize is awarded to one boy and one girl from each year group, chosen by the Year Heads, tutors and class teachers who they believe achieved to the best of their ability academically, and to also have shown an exceptional level of respect, leadership and dedication throughout the school year.
In first year the Rogha na Bliana was awarded to Samuel Gillan and Alexandra Adderley O’Brien. In second year the Roghla na Bliana was awarded to Shane Collins and Taylor Brandon. In third year the award went to Lucy Phibbs-Rooney and Cian Hunt, and in fifth year the award went to Sinéad Jordan and Aaron Johnston.
Congratulations to our worthy winners and to all the students who were shortlisted for the prize this year. Your great contribution to our school does not go unnoticed.
The Rogha na Bliana Awards for sixth year will be presented on Graduation Night which takes place on Thursday, May 24, at 7.30 p.m., and the TY Rogha na Bliana will be presented on Transition Year Exhibition Night, which will take place on Tuesday, May 29, at 7.30 p.m.
Thanks to our parents’ council who supported this year’s’ Prize Day and a very special thanks to Ms Tarrant for the huge amount of work she put in to planning and coordinating the big event, and ensuring that the day runs so smoothly.
HEAD GIRL/BOY ANNOUNCED
Rebecca Hayden and Charlie Delaney Byrne were announced Head Girl and Head Boy at the Senior Prize Day ceremony which took place on Friday, May 18. Brian Short and Jade Byrne, the outgoing Head Boy and Head Girl, formally handed over to Rebecca and Charlie with an emotional speech given by Brian.
Following the speech they passed on a Head Boy and Head Girl Record Book, which will now document the journey of every Head Boy and Head Girl from year to year.
We wish Rebecca and Charley the very best in their important role and all the staff and students of CCA wish to thank Jade and Brian for their immense contribution, being such exemplary ambassadors for the school and embodying the ethos of our mission statement.
PREFECTS HANDOVER
The ceremonial Prefects’ handover took place during the Senior Prize Day last Friday with the outgoing prefects wishing the new prefects team the very best of luck in their role as school leaders. Thanks to all the 2017-18 prefects for their commitment to the role throughout the year and we now wish the new prefect team every success for 2018/2019.
SPEECH COMPETITION CCA
Congratulations to Conor Brown from second year who was awarded first prize for the brilliant speech he gave on his chosen topic of ‘Para-cycling’. The speech contest took place last week in Coláiste Chraobh Abhann, with eight speeches being presented by Junior Cert students from CCA, under a wide variety of topics.
The researched content and speech delivery was of a very high standard and each student who participated in the competition did a wonderful job.
The contest was organised by Ms Cluskey and was kindly judged by Mr Tom Fortune.
SCHOOLS ATHLETICS
CCAs Eve Leacy was awarded silver in the Junior High Jump event in the Leinster Schools’ Championship, which took place in Santry on Wednesday, May 16.
Eve jumped an incredible 1.53m to claim second place and will now compete in the all-Ireland Schools Championships which will take place in the Tullamore Harriers stadium in June. Troy Scully competed in the highly competitive 2000m boys’ Senior Steeple Chase event and came in a commendable sixth place.
Thanks to Mr Mullen and Mr Craig for supporting our CCA athletes throughout the year.
PEER MENTORING TEAM
We are delighted to announce the Peer Mentoring Team of 2018/2019 who will be supporting our incoming first year students in September. The team are Jennita Jimmy, Ellen Devlin, Kelieanne Coughlan, Ódhran Wall, Megan Longmore, Isbael Murphy, Oisin Cullen, Reme Atiota, Ciara Murphy, Hannah Cullen, Rebecca Molloy, Chloe Crean Tighe, Lainey Magee Baker, Ciaran Fox, Casey Walsh and Kian Marah. We wish them every success in their new role.
GIRLS JUNIOR B FINAL
The CCA Junior Girls’ team once again reached the Junior B Final this year, once again coming up against Blessington, who narrowly beat them in the final last year. The girls, under the management of Ms Ward, have been unbeaten this season and were hoping to avenge last year’s defeat.
Unfortunately, one of CCAs key midfielders Eve Leacy was unavailable to play, and the loss of Taylor Bradon due to injury early on in the match meant that the CCA team were facing an uphill battle. Despite these setbacks, the girls performed admirably, with some tenacious play by Kerryanne Hamilton and Lucy Rooney. However, Blessington began to stretch their lead by the end of the first-half, and only for some great defending by some of the first year girls, the margin would have been greater.
In the second half, the introduction of Kaitlyn Butler and Ciara Short gave some stability in the full-back line, and goals from Charlotte Nagle and Lucy Rooney kept CCA in the game.In the end Blessington were just too strong on the day, but the CCA girls never stopped competing for every ball up to the final whistle.
Ms Ward said that it was a pleasure to coach such fantastic girls and she knows they will be hungry for more success come next season.
