WICKLOW ROVERS

Last week on Monday night the senior B ladies team played their first ever game, unfortunately they lost 2-0 to Terenure.

They gave it their all on the night and it could have been so different if Jade Manley’s effort had of nestled in the net instead of rattling the woodwork.

All in all it was a good first performance and there is potential in the team. As time goes on they will progress with games under their belt.

The under-18s defeated league leaders Castleknock Celtic 3-1 at Whitegates on Sunday morning, in a tough game with no quarters given Rovers ran out deserved winners. Stuart Cox, Daniel Fitzsimons and Luca Rampersaud supplied the goals, a which sees the lads move to within three points of the leaders with two games in hand.

On Tuesday, the 12As had an excellent 4-1 away win over Cabinteely, having lost at home recently to the same opposition a tough game was on the cards.

Lorcan Sinnott fired home a fantastic hat-trick with Charlie Czwalina adding a single in what was a magnificent all round team performance.

The 13Bs went down narrowly to local neighbours Rathnew in the semi-final of the U12/13 Challenge cup losing 2-1, the lads had chances but they didn’t take them. Ryan McConnell scored their goal on the night.

The 14Bs also exited at the semi final stage of the U14/15 Challenge cup losing 3-0 to Arklow Celtic, the lads never really got going in this one against a good Celtic side.

The 15As recorded a good 6-0 win over Mount Merrion to maintain their title push, Ross Quinn scored an amazing personal four goal haul with Connor Lewins and Andrew Nolan scoring one a piece.

Well done to the 15Bs who progressed to the final of the U14/15 Challenge cup when they defeated Roundwood 6-1 at the Vartry Grounds. Keevan Doyle and Adam Shepherd nabbed two a piece with Evan Dwyer and Tom Flood weighing in with singles to book their place in the final. Well done to Fred and the lads.

On Thursday night the 11As went down 3-0 away to Aughrim in the second leg of their Interim final. Leading 3-2 from the first leg nothing went right for the lads as they went down to a 5-3 aggregate defeat.

On Friday, the under-16s maintained their good run with an impressive 7-3 away victory over Avonmore, Joe O’Shea, Ben Algera and Tom O’Shea all hit doubles with Dylan Moriarty scoring one goal in a good all round team performance.

On Saturday, the 12As played out a scoreless draw with Templeogue Utd at Whitegates, the lads had plenty of chances but it was one of those days were the lads came up against a keeper at the top of his game.

Pride of place this week goes to our 13As who won the DDSL Gerry Murphy cup when they defeated Kinsealy Utd 3-0, Darragh Heffernan set them on their way with a cracker after three minutes, Jake Nally made it 2-0 before half time with Alex Sinnott putting the icing on the cake with the third midway through the second period.

It was an impressive display from the lads and history in the making as it’s the first piece of DDSL silverware to come into the club. Congratulations to Keith, Stephen and the lads.

The 13Bs progressed to the A1 Jako Cup final when they drew 1-1 with Greystones Utd winning 4-1 on aggregate.

A first goal of the season from Oliver Lawless ensured there was no comeback from Greystones. Well done Robbie and the team.

The 15As kept their assault on the DDSL Saturday A title when they beat Lourdes Celtic 2-0 at Whitegates.

Ross Quinn nabbed his sixteenth of the season with a third of the campaign from Stephen Kearns ensuring all three points were bagged by the lads.

The 15Bs went down 2-0 to Arklow Celtic in the first leg of their Premier Jako Cup semi-final, it leaves the lads with a tough assignment in the second leg but in football anything is possible.

The only junior game on Sunday involved our 14Bs, they went down 7-2 to Arklow Town in the second leg of the A1 Jako Cup semi-final losing 11-3 on aggregate. Tim Hastie fired home a double to bring his tally to 15 for the season.

The club’s annual summer camp dates having been released, Week 1 - Monday, July 2, to Friday, July 6; Week 2 - Monday, July 9, to Friday, July 13.

BRAY BOWLS

Another productive week on the bowls front with Division 4 setting the tone with a very good five points to one victory last Monday night away to Leinster.

Wednesday saw home victories for Ladies Division 1 by five points to two aginst Westmanstown and Men’s Division 6 defeated Kenilworth by three points to one to go top of the table. Both Frankie Byrne and Bobby Doyle led the way.

Thursday saw all three Vets teams in action with Vets 1 bringing home one point from CYM and Vets 2 taking all four points at home to Westmanstown to maintain their lead at the top of the table.

Both Bryon Dancer and Robert Mac Clancy contributed handsomely. Vets 3 got three points in Dun Laoghaire.

On Saturday last, our Ladies one-rink team clinched victory away to Greenhills.

The final piece of good news came on Sunday in the Shott Cup (for the men’s lower divisions). Bray narrowly saw off the challenge from CYM with Pat Tracey’s rink holding their nerve in the final end to secure the few shots needed.

Bray now have the dubious pleasure of visiting Sportslink of Santry in the next round in a fortnight’s time.

On Monday last, our Division 4 side were at home to CYM. The senior men’s teams played their postponed matches on Tuesday evening with the first team making the difficult visit to champions, St James’s Gate and the second team hosting Crumlin in Bray.

Wednesday 30th sees our Ladies Division 1 team make the long journey to Skerries and Men’s Division 6 are at home to Greenhills. Thursday has Vets 1 at home to Westmanstown, Vets 2 heading to Blackrock and Vets 3 at home to Westmanstown. There are no games this coming weekend due to the Public Holiday. Hostilities resume on Tuesday, June 5, with Men’s Division 4 having to brave the evening traffic and travel to Westmanstown.

The club championships are making good progress so let us keep up the good work. Also well done to those members taking part in the various BLI Competitions. The club lotto winner this week was Owen Byrne.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Plenty of footie last week and again loads of goals were scored.

Well done to all the team on there performance and they will be facing tougher challenges in the weeks ahead.

SOUTH EAST ROAD CLUB

It has been a busy start to the season for SERC with members partaking in both race and sportive events.

Conor Short Selected for Ireland - Well done to Conor Short whom was selected to represent Ireland at the Dolan Bike series in England in March.

Conor competed well over the two days and came away having gained invaluable experience.

This achievement is a tribute to the talent and hard work he has put in over the past year.

3 Peaks Challenge - On April 8, over 250 riders rolled out from Arklow Rocks on a dry, sunny, spring day to challenge themselves to our 100km and 70km climbing sportive around south Wicklow taking in the famous Sliabh Mann and Shay Elliott Climbs.

A great day was had by all and huge thanks go out to all the volunteers whom helped to make it such a successful day.

A lot of preparation goes into running such an event and a special mention has to be made to some of the people who without their effort and tireless work, this great event would not happen.

Tony Barnes as chief marshal, Michael Forde as administrator of the event, Willie Murphy and his road marking crew, Ronan Short and Stephen Furlong our mechanics, Sandy McCabe and Margaret O’Neill the catering organisers and all our wonderful volunteers who willingly stand at junctions for hours on end to support and ensure the safety of all riders and Arklow Rocks for the use of their excellent facilities.

Kanturk 3 Day - Ronan Short, Conor Short, Jason O’Toole and Jay Earls participated in this tough event over the May Bank Holiday. A fantastic time trial by Jay Earls achieved first place in the TT stage event and he went into the last two stages holding first place and the coveted green jersey.

With Jason O’Toole giving his all to claw back attacks in the final two stages, the two Js gave everything to hold onto the jersey right up until the last sprint.

In the end, Jay Earls finished second overall and earned enough points to move up to A3 status.

This was a fantastic result for Jay whom is only in his second season of riding and coming only a few months after a serious bike accident. Well done to Jay from all at SERC.

Gorey League Series - The Gorey League Race has been running throughout May with some fine performances in the A4 group. Jonathan Russell has taken top three finishes in three races and Wayne Byrne winning the latest league race.

Mount Leinster Challenge - A group of club members undertook the Mount Leinster Challenge on May 19.

This is a tough sportive with members tackling Mount Leinster twice in the 100km spin and three times in the 145km spin. Well done to all on a challenging but enjoyable day out.
