‘Gardeningf­or Birds’talk

Declan Murphy will deliver a talk entitled ‘Gardening for Birds’ at Enniskerry Library on Wednesday, June 6, at 7 p.m.

Topics will include what plants to grow to attract them, feed them and encourage them to nest. An introducti­on to birdsong and the dawn chorus is also included.

Declan is a local author of the recently published ‘A Life in the Trees’, a personal account of the Great Spotted Woodpecker in Ireland. ‘A life in the Trees’ explores the richness and diversity of the natural wonders found in County Wicklow, against a backdrop of a more general overview of the Great Spotted Woodpecker species in Ireland.

O’Toole has been hailed as one of the most interestin­g players of his generation, renowned for his atmospheri­c performanc­es and dazzling virtuosity.

He has given recitals throughout Europe and the US at prestigiou­s concert halls and festivals as soloist as well as with ‘The Chieftains’ and ‘Dublin Guitar Quartet’. This evening’s programme exploits the full range of his unusual eight-string guitar and cello style technique; beginning with transcript­ions of JS Bach and Haydn before visiting Mexico and Spain for the music of Rodrigo and Ponce and ending with Carlo Domeniconi’s masterwork ‘Koyunbaba. some firm favourites from concerts over the past five years.

VoB Musical director John Ivory has also indicated that there will some new elements within the concert programme this year, but he is remaining tight-lipped till June.
