Big win for Wicklow

Primary school students topple the Dubs in Portlaoise

-

MINI Game Success for the Garden County - In what was a rather mundane day for Wicklow GAA on Sunday, May 27, there was one ray of hope that shone on the day, that being the display of our primary school children at half-time in the Mini Games.

Although apprehensive prior to throw in, our boys displayed all the attributes that are needed to perform at the top level. Their teamwork, skill level and ‘never say die’ attitude were very evident in this close encounter.

An inexperienced team took to what was a very large pitch, in front of a crowd of over 11,000 patrons and soon settled into the rhythm of the game. A counter attacking game, which ebbed and flowed, saw our boys dominate the Dubs for large portions of the game, eventually coming out on top by a goal.

“We in Allianz Cumann na mBunscol do sincerely hope that this Wicklow team got a taster of what is needed to perform on the national stage and we’ll hopefully see them again in 2028 playing in the main game,” said a Cumann na mBunscol spokesperson.

“A huge ‘thank you’ goes to the players for showing such a keen interest in representing their county as well as to their parents who very kindly co-operated with all demands made of them”.

The Wicklow Team on the day was: Seán McHugh (Moneystown NS), Seán Byrne (Kilcoole NS), Seán McLeavey (Kilcoole NS), Seán Meyler (St. Laurence’s, Greystones), Conal Butler (St. Cronan’s Bray), James Healy (St. Cronan’s Bray), Daniel Connerty (St. Kevin’s Greystones), Jack Ward (St. Kevin’s Greystones), Oscar Durston (Moneystown NS) and Robert Moore (St.Laurence’s Greystones).

Sunshine and Super Football - A great day’s football was held on Thursday, May 31, in Bray Emmets. Girls from third and fourth class participated in a nine-a-side participation blitz. There were no goalkeepers and scores were points only. The focus of the day was to encourage participation and to have fun. The girls responded well to this challenge and some great games were played. Thanks to the young whistlers who took charge and well done to all who participated!

The schools that participated were: St. Laurence’s, Ashford, Wicklow Educate Together, Kilcoole, Newtown, Scoil Chualann, St. Fergal’s, Roundwood and Moneystown.

Next week is the turn of the third and fourth class boy footballers on Thursday, June 7, at 11.45 a.m. in Bray.

Sports Day Meeting and Online Registration - This year’s Sports Day meeting will take place on June 7 at 8p.m. in Newtownmountkennedy Primary School. It is imperative that any school participating in Sports Day 2018 is represented and the entry fee of €50 be returned at this meeting.

This meeting will deal with the organisation of the sports day: School participants’ numbers will be handed out; Jobs will be allocated to all schools.

We are asking that all schools attending this year’s Sports Day be conscious that this is a volunteer organised event!

Organised by us, the teachers, for the benefit and enjoyment of our pupils and to promote a positive attitude to healthy living and physical activity.

To ensure the continued success of the Sports Day schools should be mindful of their responsibilities towards: Providing an adequate number of helpers/volunteers on the day (who are Garda Vetted - this is a must!), those with a knowledge of athletics would be very welcome; taking charge of a job/role; ensuring the safety and supervision of your pupils throughout the day; tidying up litter, deck chairs, tents, etc etc. after the event is over.

Due to the large number of schools taking part, for this to be a successful event, and in the interest of fairness, it is essential that each participating school be represented and takes responsibility for a job.

As in previous years we are using the online system for registration. This must be done before the meeting on June 7.

Sports Day - This year’s Allianz Cumann na mBunscol Sports Day will take place in Charlesland Sport and Recreation Park, Greystones on Wednesday, June 13, at 10 a.m. sharp.
