WICKLOW ROVERS

The senior ladies ‘A’ team kicked off their season with a 1-1 draw away to last year’s league winners Donnycarney.

Niamh O’Brien put the girls in front but the home side fought back and levelled in the second half to ensure the spoils would be shared.

This was a good solid start from the girls who were more than happy with their performance.

The ladies ‘B’ team went down 5-1 to Knockmitten in their second game; a lot of the girls would never have played football before so it will take a while for them to get into the swing of things.

The good thing is they played with a smile on their faces and were rewarded with a consolation goal from Charmaine Higgins.

Our 17As drew 1-1 with Aughrim Rgrs at Whitegates on Tuesday.

Gary O’Connor scored what looked like for a long time was the winning goal but, unluckily for the lads, Aughrim snatched a last minute leveller.

The 17Bs claimed all three points when they beat Arklow Town 5-2 on Wednesday evening, Conor Collier helped himself to a brace with Jack O’Gorman, Nicky Kearney and Joseph O’Shea all scoring one apiece.

Junior action was curtailed in the club last week with only a handful of games been played due to the Bank Holiday weekend.

On Tuesday, the 15As made it three wins on the bounce without conceding a goal when they beat Lourdes Celtic 1-0 away from home.

Having defeated the same opposition on the Saturday at Whitegates it was always going to be tough to win back to back against them but that the lads did.

Ross Quinn found the net yet again for number seventeen of the season to ensure the lads stay firmly in the title race.

The 15Bs produced a great performance away to Arklow Celtic in the second leg of their Premier Jako Cup semi-final.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, the lads dominated the game but found a tough Celtic rearguard hard to breakdown.

The game ended 1-1 with the lads losing 3-1 on aggregate. They threw everything at the home side and in the words of their manager: “One of the best matches I have ever been involved in’’.

Their goal came from a deflection off an Arklow defender.

On Wednesday, our under-12As recorded a magnificent victory when they defeated Dalkey Utd on penalties in the semi-final of the DDSL Hillary Cup.

The match itself ended 1-1 after extra-time, Dalkey took the lead midway through the first period but the lads powered back in the second half with an equaliser from Brian McCaul.

The lads did have the chances to win the game before the dreaded penalty shootout but a couple of good saves from the away custodian and some wayward finishing from Rovers meant it was all down to who would hold their nerve.

Dalkey led after the first series of spotkicks, but a couple of coolly struck penalties from Brian McCaul and Josh Butler coupled with a brilliant save from Adam Doyle put Rovers in the driving seat. Dalkey’s last penalty struck the post and bounced away to safety which meant the lads were through to the final where they will now meet Peamount Utd. Well done Dixie, Ian and the lads and good luck in the final.

Team of the week goes to our 15Bs, if you want proof that commitment, hard work, dedication and persistence pays off, then have a look at our 15Bs.

Season after season this bunch of young men turned out on the training ground and on match day hail, rain or snow.

They suffered defeat after defeat but they didn’t let it dent their enthusiasm for the sport, they kept going when it would have been so easy to walk away.

Major credit goes to the whole squad for their efforts and they are duly seeing the rewards this season.

Another person who deserves all the plaudits that come his way is Fred Boxall their manager, he has also shown commitment, dedication, hard work and persistence with this squad of players and deserves all the success that is coming his way.

Having already claimed the Interim cup they added the under 14/15 Challenge Cup on Saturday when they defeated Arklow Celtic 5-2 in Celtic Park in Arklow.

Keevan Doyle and Adam Shepherd both scored a brace with Tom Flood nabbing a single.

It was an excellent performance from every player involved. Congratulations to Fred and the lads, if any team deserves success it is this group of young men.

A magnificent achievement from everyone involved.

The club lotto winner this week was John Dunne.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Only our under-14s were in action last week and they made it two wins on the spin with victory at home to Roundwood.

They had to do it the hard way by coming from behind after been 3-2 down at the break to run out 7-3 winners with an excellent second half display.

Hat-tricks from Shane Dunleavy and Jason Carthy and a single from Charlie Sullivan accounted for the scores in a good team display.
