Cottage and land fetch €286k at auction

-

A DERELICT farmhouse and agricultural land in south Wicklow has fetched €286,000 at auction.

The well-attended auction of Ballygahan, Avoca, took place at the Woodenbridge Hotel and was sold under the gavel of Arklow auctioneer Raymond Gaffney.

The property was offered for sale in a single lot, or in two, with the first the derelict farmhouse, outbuildings and 4.5 acres of agricultural land and the second 12 acres of land.

Bidding started on Lot 1 at €70,000 and parked at €160,000 while the starting bit for Lot 2 was €70,000 and reached €82,000.

As bids on the entire property for Lot 3 did not exceed the bids of Lot 1 and Lot 2, they were placed back on the market.

The farmhouse and 4.5 acres eventually sold to a couple from Dublin for €168,000 while the remaining 12 acres sold to a local farmer for €100,000.

According to Mr Gaffney, there is a huge demand for this type of property (houses with land attached) and he is constantly inundated with requests for similar properties.
