Full monitoring of Little Tern project
A TEAM of wardens have been in place since April monitoring the Little Tern conservation project in Kilcoole.
Protective fencing, signs and hides have bee put in place around the breeding colony and the terns are observed for 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This is mainly to prevent disturbance from predators and rambunctious dogs
At the moment over 200 Little Terns are in the area, with new nests being discovered daily and monitored. Currently there are over 60 pairs with eggs. Eight pairs of Ringed Plovers, some with chicks, four pairs of Oystercatchers with eggs and a couple of pairs of Skylark are also breeding within the protected area.
Wardens will be on hand to answer any questions visitors may have and to show them the incubating terns, as well as providing a visual deterrent to would-be predators.
