Excellent performances at the late night leagues

-

The Garda Late Night Leagues have come to close with two teams going on to represent Wicklow at the Dublin Late Night League finals at Tallaght Astro Park.

Newtown FC and Donny’s Squad were selected to play in the Dublin Late Night League Finals Night following their performances in the Bray late night league’s, which were run by Bray Community Gardai with support from the FAI and Wicklow Sports Promotion Team. The league took place at the Loreto Astro Pitch on the Vevay Road during the month of April. Both teams performed excellently in the Dublin event and were a match for all the Dublin teams. Donny’s Squad from Bray were unfortunate not to make it to the final having finished as runners-up in their group and playing some great football on the night.

Newtown FC, supported by the local Youth Development Officer Linda White, played some very skilful football on the night. They got through the group stages undefeated and continued this impressive display in the final, which they won 2-0 to become champions.

Both teams represented Wicklow to the highest standards and in a very sportsmanlike way throughout the finals.

Sgt John FitzPatrick said: ‘ The late night leagues continue to be a great success in Bray, giving local teenagers free, supervised football on Friday nights. I am especially delighted that Wicklow teams continue to punch above their weight in the regional finals in Dublin.

‘I would also like note the dedication of Garda John Thompson in particular for spearheading this initiative in Bray, with great support from all our partners, without whom the leagues simply could not run.’

The gardaí would like to thank Dublin Bus and Bray Wanderers for their on-going support
