INDOOR BOWLS

Kildare West Wicklow Indoor Bowling Association (KWWIBA)

Hectic Schedule In Ardclough Tournament Over Two Days - The Ardclough annual indoor bowling triples tournament in honour of the late Tony Hegarty took place on Saturday and Sunday 2nd and 3rd June in the Ardclough GAA hall. With thirty-two teams competing it made for a very hectic schedule to complete the event in the two-day time frame.

Given that it was played on the Bank Holiday weekend and the weather so good also it still managed to draw a good attendance.

There was a lot of great games and plenty of excitement to keep the spectators occupied and happy throughout the event.

There were also some shocks along the way as some of the top teams and favourites took a tumble in the early rounds.

The biggest shock of the tournament was the inexperienced Abbey Bowls team knocking out Baltinglass/Kiltegan whom many would have highly fancied and favoured to make it to the final at least.

St. Laurences also reached the quarter final with a team of newcomers before exiting the competition, which was a great achievement in its own right.

In the Cup final Rathmore saw off the challenge of Rathangan. This was the fourth final in succession that the Rathmore side contested, losing the previous three, so joy at last in a well-deserved victory.

Rathmore: Ann Shaw, Tony Fitzpatrick and Frank Feane.

Rathangan: Paddy Dunne, Eileen Smullen and Tony Smullen.

In the Shield final Kildare defeated Caragh to take the honours. Kildare showed tremendous form throughout the tournament and deserved the victory.

Kildare: Una Downey, Fintan Downey and Mark Caldwell.

Caragh: Phil Ryan, Peter Hunt, Breff O’Rourke and sub Dom Kavanagh.

A special word of thanks must go to the Ardclough catering staff, one of the most difficult tasks of all and they made sure there was no shortage of refreshments and deserve great credit for a job well done.

And congrats to The Ardclough club for a wonderful and well run tournament. Of course lets not forget the teams for their participation in making it all worthwhile.

WICKLOW ROVERS

Football activity within the club this week was curtailed to the junior section.

There was one game in midweek and that was our under-11As who ply their trade in the under-12 section.

They travelled to take on a strong Enniskerry side and unfortunately lost 4-0, the lads had openings but didn’t take them.

Weekend action started on Saturday with our under-12As away game to Peamount Utd in the DDSL, the lads recorded and excellent 3-2 win to collect three valuable points to keep them top of the table.

Brian McCaul put Rovers one up and then Charlie Czwalina made it 2-0. Peamount pulled one back before the break.

In the second half, Rovers restored their two goal cushion when Brian McCaul notched his second of the game and his seventh of the season.

The home side pulled one back late on but the lads stood firm in the dying minutes to record a good win against one of their title rivals.

Our 12Cs suffered a 7-1 away defeat to Sporting Greystones, the lads tried their best but couldn’t get a foothold at all in the game. They did have the consolation of a second goal of the season from Luke Dunne.

The 13As had a setback when they suffered their first defeat of the season when they lost 2-0 at home to Manortown Utd.

While this is the lads’ first defeat, hopefully it will spur them on to another unbeaten run. The game itself saw the away side rely on the long ball game, which worked effectively for them.

The lads did have chances of their own in the game. While this is a setback for the lads the destination of the title is still very much in their own hands.

The 13Bs had a resounding 9-0 victory over Greystones Utd, having drew recently with the same opponents the lads proved much more clinical in front of goal this time round.

Charlie Phelan led the way with a fantastic hat-trick to take his tally to nine for the season. Peter Dunne moved on to seven in the scoring charts when he added a brace.

Joining Peter on seven was Ryan McConnell who nabbed a single on the day, Adam Byrne scored his fourth of the season when he netted one while both Cormac Waldron and Aaron Nolan both fired home their first goals of the campaign to complete the nine goal haul.

Sunday’s action was limited to just two games and there was no joy for either team, the 11As went down to a narrow 2-1 defeat away to Ashford Rovers under-11s in the under-12 Premier league, it was a closely fought encounter between two sides playing a year above their natural age group.

The lads took an early lead when Sonny McHale headed home from a corner for his tenth of the season.

The home side hit back with two unanswered goals to claim all three points.

The 12Bs made the journey to the Coolboy Sports Ground to take on the local Rangers side but unfortunately for the lads it was a bad day at the office as they went down to a 4-0 defeat. Try that they did the lads just couldn’t make ant inroads on a strong Coolboy rearguard.

Over recent times we have been trying to set up a fundraising committee that would work in conjunction with the executive committee, this sub committee would be responsible with the running of the fundraising and the suggesting of ways of fundraising for the club.

This is a very important part of the progression of the club for the future.

We are inviting any person that would be interested in helping out on this sub committee, its your club and if you would like it to progress why not come on board and help out.

If fundraising isn’t your thing there is plenty of other ways to help out.

Don’t just assume someone else will come forward, come along and help the club progress, all help no matter how big or small would be very much appreciated.

BRAY BOWLS

An extremely busy week on the rinks. Tuesday last saw Division 4 away in Westmanstown and a tough time was had. Bray brought home one point.

The ladies Division 1 team were at home to Blackrock on Wednesday and had a good victory by 5 points to 2 despite being a player short.

On the same night our men’s Division 6 team were due to travel to Crumlin but notice was received that Crumlin withdrew from the Division.

Thursday had all three Vets teams in action with two wins and a draw achieved.

Vets 1 were impressive winners away to St. James Gate whist Vets 3 had a home victory against near neighbours Greystones.

Vets 2 travelled to Clontarf and in a real ding dong affair honours were shared.

On a marvellous sunny Saturday our Division 1 team went down 1/6 at home to Leinster whilst Div 2 had an impressive 6/1 victory away to St.James’ s Gate where Ray Rigley was outstanding.

The Ladies Saturday team defeated Crumlin at home to maintain their steady climb up the table. Sunday had three men’s teams in cup action with our two senior teams qualifying for their respective semi-finals with victories over Kenilworth and Westmanstown.

Unfortunately, our team in the Shott Cup came up short away to Sportslink.

This week sees Division 4 at home to Aer Lingus on Monday. Wednesday has the ladies at home to Shankill and Division 6 at home to league newcomers North Kildare.

All three Vets teams are in action on Thursday with Vets 1 and 3 at home to Ierne and CYM respectively. Vets 2 make the long trek to North Co . Dublin to take on Skerries.

The ladies Saturday team travel to Blackrock.

On Monday, June 18, Division 4 make the short hop to Greystones and the following day Division 1 are away in Blackrock and Division 2 are at home to Lerne.

Finally, congrats to Owen Byrne on winning the lotto for the second time in three weeks.
