Avoca residents want brakes puton speeding motorists

June 2003

-

RESIDENTS on a stretch of busy road in Avoca are looking to have the brakes put on traffic flying past.

Local people want traffic speeds slashed to 40 mph on the road from Avoca bridge to The Meetings, which they see as a death trap at the moment.

With cars travelling at 60 mph and more at present, it is a game of Russian roulette for local motorists trying to enter on to the road and for pedestrians attempting to cross the road, they say.

Last week area councillor Nicky Kelly was given a petition, signed by close to 150 local people, to present to Wicklow County Council seeking to have a 40 mph speed limit on that stretch of road.

The concerned local people want this speed restriction imposed now, and not wait until someone is seriously injured or there is a fatality for action to be taken.

The residents also want repairs carried out to the footpath as pedestrians cannot walk on sections of it at the moment.
