BRAY BOWLS

A very successful week on the rinks this week for Bray. Monday last saw Division 4 at home to Aer Lingus and in a very solid display from all and in particular from Niall Shelley saw Bray take all points on offer.

Wednesday saw Division 6 take on North Kildare with Aidan King making his debut for Bray in a 4/0 win. Others to impress for Bray on the night were Pat Crinnion and Tommy Quinn.

On the same day our Ladies were due to take on near neighbours Shankill but unfortunately Shankill were unable to field a team.

Thursday had the three Vets teams in action and all recorded good wins. Vets 1 had a comprehensive 4/0 win at home to Lerne to maintain their position at the top of the table.

Vets 2 took all four points away in a top of the table clash away to Skerries in very windy conditions where the bowls on the rink were blowing around as much as the nearby Windmills.

Vets 3 completed the clean sweep with a good 3/1 win at home to CYM to move to second place in the table. Both Dave Matthews and Tommy Quinn contributed handsomely.

The ladies Saturday team had no luck away in Blackrock.

This week the Ladies Division 1 team have a free week. Thursday sees Vets 1 and 2 at home to Crumlin and Vets 3 away in Santry against Sportslink. Saturday has the ladies away in Greystones. Division 1 are in Dun Laoghaire whilst Division 2 host the same opposition. Monday, June 25 sees Division 4 commence the second half of the season away to Sportslink.

Finally, well done to Walter Doyle on getting to the last 16 of the BLI Senior Singles and to Walter and Tony Murphy on reaching the last 16 of the BLI Senior Pairs competition. The lucky lotto winner this week is Eoghain Brady.

WICKLOW ROVERS

We had a reduced programme of games last week. It all started on Wednesday night when our under-12As had to replay their DDSL Hillary Cup semi-final against Dalkey United.

The lads had won the first game on 2-1 on penalties but the game was ordered to be replayed as it was deemed five penalties should have been taken on the night and not three as was the case, a bit harsh on the lads to say the least.

The lads got off to the worse possible start when the away side went in front after five minutes directly from a free kick.

Rovers continued on the front foot but all moves seemed to break down when they got into the final third of the pitch.

However, just before the break, the lads did draw level when Jack Macklin fired home a free kick to send the sides in at the break all square.

The second half proved to be a scrappy affair but ten minutes in Rovers had a great chance to go in front, Brian McCaul cut in from the left, but his effort was parried by the keeper and the Dalkey defender was quickest to react clearing his lines.

This proved to be the turning point as Dalkey broke upfield to score. Adam Doyle in the Rovers goal pulled of a magnificent save but the away striker followed up to fire home to make it 2-1. Rovers kept going forward in search of another leveler, but they were hit on the counter attack as Dalkey put the game to bed with a third.

The lads gave it their all on the night and even though it was a heart-breaking defeat for the lads hopefully it will spur them on and they can go all out for the league title.

Saturday’s action saw the 11As go down 3-1 away to Rathnew in the under-12 Premier league. It was a good contest between the lads and their neighbours; Sonny McHale registered his 11th goal of the season for Rovers.

An understrength under-12Cs went down to a heavy 8-0 defeat to Coolboy Rangers at Whitegates. The lads found the going tough but to their credit they battled from start to finish. They gave 100 per cent in effort and deserved to get on the scoreboard but it just didn’t happen.

The 13As got back on the winning track when they travelled to take on Castleknock Celtic and returned home with all three points in a comfortable 7-0 victory.

Jake Nally led the way with an excellent hat-trick to bring his tally to eight for the season.

Oscar Malcolmson nabbed a brace to move on to 13 in the goal scorers’ charts. Darragh Heffernan grabbed a single for his fourth of the campaign with Alex Sinnott claiming his second of the season to complete the seven-goal haul in what was an excellent all-round team performance to collect three valuable points to keep their hopes of a league and cup double very much in their sights.

There was only the one game down for decision on Sunday and that was our 13Bs who entertained Greystones Utd A at Whitegates. Both teams had to be happy with a point a piece after a 1-1 draw. Rovers dominated the game from start to finish and were unlucky not to take all three points. Rovers led from Adam Byrne’s fifth goal of the campaign but were cruelly denied all three points when the away side levelled in the last minute with a hotly disputed goal which was their only effort all afternoon. Rovers can be happy with their performance as they played some nice football on the day.

Just a reminder to all managers, will you please send in your match results asap after your game is finished. In the text it should state the competition, result and goal scorers if any, thank you.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

Plenty of football last weekend as we edge ever closer to the summer break.

Our under-8s travelled to take on Arklow Town and despite finding the going tough they acquitted themselves well. Among the players who starred were Colin Healy, Aaron Nolan and Nathan Donohoe.

Our under-9s ended up with no game after their opposition failed to muster a team.

The under-10s (kindly sponsored by Real Debt Solutions) also travelled to Arklow where they edged out the home side in a cracking game of football.

Ryan Collins signed off with a hat trick before he headed away on his holidays while Sebastian Anton and William Valentine scored a goal each. Best were Mikey Synnott, Aaron Roy and Kacey Kelly.

The under-11s had an off day at home to Enniskerry White in a game where the away side edged in front early on and Newtown despite plenty of goals on each side just couldn’t get their noses in front.

The Newtown goals came from Jake Robertson 2 (1pen), Dylan Dunleavy and Brooklyn Doyle. On the day there were good performances from Cilia Coffey, Jack Daly and Cormac Chance.

The under-12s had a good 7-1 home win over Ashford Rovers who to give them their due battled away until the very end.

Padraig Gammell scored a hattrick, Patrick Martin scored twice and there were singles for Aaron Cawley and Keira Farrelly.

The under-14s also had an excellent win at home, defeating Avonmore. Bobby Dowling scored a hat trick, Jason Carthy scored twice, while Charlie Sullivan, Adam White and Luke Breen added the others. Jamie Hamilton, Michael Byrne, Laragh Davis and Sean Bishop played well.

We have only the three players this week celebrating their birthdays in the coming week and they are Kayla Hamilton from the under-8s, Felix Geoghegan from our under-9s and Eoghan Fox from our under-12s. Happy birthday to all from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.
