Electronic voting is onway
June 1999
Last Friday just might be the last time for people to vote in elections in the traditional way of marking ballot papers.
For the Department of the Environment is now carrying out research into an electronic method of voting and counting of votes for future elections, which would give almost instantaneous results after the close of the polls.
Arklow UDC has been chosen as one of six local authorities nationwide by the DOE to carry out research into a method of electronic voting for the future.
Town Clerk Sean QUirke said that the 4,436 votes cast in last Friday’s urban election in ARklow would, after waiting the statutory 28 day period in case of a legal challenge, be forwarded to the DOE for the electronic tests to be carried out.
