Cricket blitz draws pupils from all over north Wicklow

-

THE next Ed, Cecelia or Isobel Joyce may well have been strutting their stuff in Co. Wicklow last week as the stars of tomorrow took part in a cricket blitz.

Aideen Rice, the President of the Irish Cricket Union, was treated to the sight of 80 national school pupils from throughout Co. Wicklow compete in an excellent blitz on Thursday.

Eight teams of boys and girls from five schools played in the games at Templecarrig School, Greystones, which were organised by Leinster Cricket development officer Jim Stewart who has been coaching the art of cricket to the eager pupils in the schools.

Aideen presented plaques, donated by Nicky’s Fruit and Veg Kilcoole, to school captains Sam Hill of St Laurence’s, Delgany, David Stewart of St Patrick’s, Greystones, Sophie Massey of Delgany NS, Emily Ludlow of Nun’s Cross and Ethan Poland of Kilcoole PS.

The tournament was the end of season finale of the Leinster Cricket Union’s initiative to develop cricket in Wicklow schools and many teachers have since signed up as coaches which will hopefully help to grow the sport in the Garden County.
