BRAY BOWLS

id-summer has come and gone, and the Bray Bowlers are still going strong on all fronts. Our Division 4 team were in action in Greystones last Monday and unfortunately our neighbours proved too strong on the night.

Seanie Shortt’s rink had hard luck just losing to the very last bowl of the night.

Tuesday saw Division 1 take five points home from Blackrock and Division 2 take 5.5 points at home to Ierne.

In the Division 2 game Robert Mac Clancy made a welcome return to the team and led the way with some outstanding bowling. Wednesday had Division 6 making the long trek to Westmanstown and they brought home 1 point from a difficult venue to maintain their top three position.

Thursday as usual had all three Vets teams in action and all 3 recorded wins to maintain their positions at the top of their respective leagues.

Both Vets 1 and 2 were at home to Crumlin and both had comprehensive wins.

Stephen Morris ‘s rink with Mick Dunne playing in an unaccustomed role at number 2 were involved in a humdinger and eventually secured victory on the last end.

Vets 3 had a great 3/1 win away to Sportslink where Eddie Condren and Pat Brosnan produced some top-class shots. Keep it going all you Vets.

On Saturday last the ladies had a good win at home to Greystones. Both Division 1 and 2 played Dun Laoghaire with Division 1 travelling and Division 2 having home advantage.

The Division 1 boys picked up two points and the Division 2 team got 4. All in all, it was a very satisfactory week’s return for all concerned.

This Wednesday both the Ladies Division 1 and Men’s Division 6 travel to leafy Rathmines to take on Kenilworth.

Thursday has Vets 1 away also to Kenilworth. Vets 2 away to Herbert Park and Vets 3 at home to our near neighbours Shankill.

On Saturday, June 30, both Division 1 and 2 commence the second half of the league with Division 1 away to CYM and Division 2 at home to the same opposition.

On the same day our Ladies Saturday team are away to Kenilworth.

On Monday, July 2, Division 4 are at home to Lerne. Finally, well done to Eoghain Brady and Pat Crinnion for organising the World Cup Competitions and to Brendan Duffy the lucky lotto winner this week.

WICKLOW ROVERS

The senior ladies A team had an excellent 4-1 away win over Mourne Skerries last week, prolific goal scorer Niamh O’Brien bagged a hat-trick with Kellie Ryder nabbing a spectacular goal from the halfway line. Niamh O’Brien, Clarisse Broughan, Leanne Sullivan and Kasey Doyle stood out in a good team performance.

The under-17Bs went down to a 2-1 defeat to Arklow United in their last league game, missing several regulars the lads were helped out by some the under-16s and it was one of those players who hit the back of the net with Paul Marah netting.

In junior action the under-11As, playing in the under-12 Premier division, had a great 3-0 home win over St Anthon’ys A, Sonny McHale found the net twice to move on to 13 for the season with Joe Culleton nabbing his fifth of the campaign in what was a very impressive performance from the team.

The 12Bs played out a scoreless draw with Avonmore A in Rathdrum, in a tight encounter both defences were on top throughout but for a scoreless game it proved to be very exciting.

Our 13As maintained their impressive start to life in the DDSL when they claimed all three points in a good 2-1 away victory over Collinstown FC. Jake Nally scored his ninth of the season with Mikey Nolan finding the back of the net for the second time this season as the lads keep the pressure on league leaders Marks Celtic in their pursuit of a league and cup double.

An understrength 13Bs went down narrowly to Greystones United A losing 2-1 at Woodlands. The lads cruelly lost out to a wicked deflected goal, the highlight of the game for Rovers was a clinical tenth goal of the season from Charlie Phelan.

Over recent times we have been trying to set up a fundraising committee that would work in conjunction with the executive committee, this subcommittee would be responsible with the running of the fundraising and the suggesting of ways of fundraising for the club.

This is a very important part of the progression of the club for the future. We are inviting any person that would be interested in helping out on this subcommittee, it’s your club and if you would like it to progress why not come on board and help out.

If fundraising isn’t your thing there is plenty of other ways to help out. Don’t just assume someone else will come forward, come along and help the club progress, all help no matter how big or small would be very much appreciated. If interested you can contact any committee members, private message the club Facebook page or approach any club member, thank you.

The club’s weekly junior soccer academy continues every Saturday morning [weather permitting] under the watchful eye of senior club coach Johnny Dunne.

The academy starts at 11 o’clock and finishes at 12. There is no need for registration, so you can come along to any week that suits. Come along and learn the skills of football while having fun and enjoyment, it’s a great way of meeting new friends as you learn the skills as you get prepared for the introduction to participate in organised league football in the coming years.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS

The last games before a wellearned summer break as usual brought loads of goals, thrills and spills. On Thursday evening our under-8s hosted Wicklow Rovers Green and both teams went onto provide plenty of exciting football in their series of games. Best for Newtown were Kayla Hamilton, Colin Healy and Gerry Hoban.

Our under-9s had no game as their opponents had all flown off to the sun!

Great game between our 10s (who are kindly sponsored by Real Debt Solutions) and Carnew in sub-tropical conditions. All the goals in this game were scored in the first half as Aidan Heffernan, William Valentine, David Mackey and Dylan Dunleavy hit the net for Newtown. Among those who starred for Newtown were Mikey Synnott, Nichita Neaga, Aaron Roy and Pat Carey.

The under-11s enjoyed a narrow win away to St. Anthonys thanks to goals from Brooklyn Doyle (3), Jake Robertson and Jack Daly.

The under-12s hosted Enniskerry B on Wednesday evening and with a couple of regulars unavailable they had to settle for a share of the spoils in a 2-2 draw. Iggy Szpilka (pen) and Eoghan Fox both scored for Newtown and in doing so notched their first goals of the season.

Among those who starred on the evening were Iggy, Aaron Hackett, Hannah Martinand Jack Coughlan. Also special mention to William Valentine who togged out for the team and did very well.

Our under-14s travelled to take on table toppers Arklow Town and unfortunately, they went down to an 8-4 defeat. This was a game where mistakes in defence were punished throughout the game. Newtown’s goals were scored by Luke Breen (2), Charlie Sulivan and an own goal.

These games conclude games now until the end of August beginning of September as we break up for the summer break in the “calendar football season”.

The WDSL will be running invitational competitions for most age groups over the summer months and we will have further details in the weeks ahead.

We have four players from the club celebrating their birthdays in the coming week and they are Matthew Whelan from the Development Squad, Lucas Dowdall from our under-9s, Pat Carey from the under-10s and Edward Valentine from our under-12s. Happy birthday to all from everyone at Newtown Juniors F.C.

There are also a couple of slots on all our teams at the moment so if there are any girls or boys who would like to join the club please contact our secretary Hughie at 087 6987653 and he will provide you with all the information you will need.

We extend our sincere sympathies to the families and friends of Kim Rushe, Arklow (and late of Sycamore Drive), Patsy O’Toole Kilcoole (and late of Monalin Newtownmountkennedy) and Frances Kileen of Season Park (and late of Timore Newcastle) who all sadly passed away last week. May they all rest in peace.
