KILLEGAR CEMETERY

John Callan, president of the Enniskerry History Society, reminds readers that tomorrow night (Thursday) the annual blessing of the graves in Killegar Cemetery will take place at 7.30 p.m. and all are welcome to attend.

There is a great deal of history attached to this site as it is known that it was a monastic settlement dating from the early Christian times. After 400 AD, the earliest building were constructed of wood or wattle and daub but have not stood the test of time and so very little remains of them. It was only with the arrival of the Vikings that the switch over to constructing buildings and churches with stone commenced as it was quickly discovered that these withstood the ravages of invasion better than wooden/timber buildings.

On this basis, the church at Killegar was built sometime during the ninth century with the site consisting of a small church and a number of small bee-hive huts where the monks lived. This cluster of buildings was enclosed by another inner wall which cut off the monks from the outside world.

The cemetery also contains a Mass Rock dating back to the era of the Penal laws, with two of the oldest gravestones being dated 1830 and 1854 respectively. About ¼ mile north-east of the church is a well known as ‘The Well of the church’, the waters from which were supposed to cure sore eyes. Some of the artefacts recovered from this site are thought to be at 1000+ years old.

MEALS ON WHEELS

The Meals on Wheels service which operates in Enniskerry and Kilmacanogue, delivers hot meals every Tuesday and Thursday to older people in their homes. It’s an opportunity to connect with the community and provide a hot meal and social contact call to older people in the area. We are looking for volunteer drivers who can give up two or three hours twice a month to facilitate this much needed service. Interested volunteers should contact Maoiliosa Kelly at 086 8322466 for further information.

HORSE SHOW

The Kilmacanogue and District Horse Show takes place on Saturday, July 28, in Monastery, Enniskerry. We are very grateful to Syl and Mary Fenelon Bourke for the use of their magnificent field to hold the show.

WALKING ASSOCIATION

The Enniskerry Walking Association was formed in 2004 to protect traditional walking routes in the area and to promote walking for recreation, for health, as a safe alternative to car use, and to help us all to learn more about our locality.

Our popular Tuesday evening walks usually meet at the Spar in Enniskerry at 7 p.m. Saturday walks meet at 1.30 p.m. All, who are interested, adults or children, are most welcome. Walks vary in length but most last between one-and-a half and two-and-ahalf hours; some (but not all) involve a bit of climbing. Please wear appropriate warm and rain-proof clothing, and proper walking boots for the occasional muddy or rocky track. In the interests of walker’s comfort and safety participants are asked to respect the directions of the walk leader and stay between the leader and the anchor person.

This Tuesdays Walk is Crone Wood to Maulin via Waterfall overlook. Approximately four miles, 2.5 hours, 1,500 ft. climb. Meet outside Spar at 7 p.m. or Crone car park at 7.20 p.m. Feel free just to turn up (sharp) on any of the Tuesday walks.

If you want any further information, phone Niall Lenoach, EWA chairperson (087 9284934) or Noel Barry, EWA secretary at 01 2860043 email enniskerrywalking@gmail.com. Please note that this is a community activity organised by volunteers who accept no liability for injuries or loss caused to participants in any of the above walks.
