Soccer stars to line out for Spirit of Wicklow fundraiser in aid of hospice

THERE is a fantastic opportunit­y to meet some top class soccer players and help raise funds for Wicklow Hospice later this year.

On September 15 there will be a family fundraiser in aid of the hospice featuring a match between leading European soccer players and the Wicklow Hospice Select.

Some of the soccer stars taking part in the Spirit of Wicklow fundraiser are Jose Kleberson, Tom Boyd, Clayton Blackmore and Wicklow’s own Gary Messett.

World Cup performanc­es led Scolari to declar that Kléberson the driving force behind Brazil’s cup-winning side. Tom Boyd played for Chelsea then transferre­d to Celtic. He was captain when they stopped Rangers winning nine league titles in a row 97/98. Brian McClair of Celtic and Man Utd won four premiershi­p league titles, one Super Cup, one European Cup Winners’ Cup, two FA Cups, two League Cups and the Scottish League and Cup.

Clayton Blackmore joined Man Utd at 14 years of age. He was part of teams that won the Premier League, the European Cup Winners’ Cup, Super Cup and the FA Cup.

Keith Gillespie played with Man Utd, Newcastle and Blackburn and won the League Cup and Charity Shield.

Wicklow’s own legend Gary Messett is the ambassador for the Wicklow Hospice Select teams. He is captain of the Irish Cerebral Palsy team playing in the European championsh­ips later this month. Gary has won best player in the last three tournament­s and has also won two FAI internatio­nal awards

The event’s main partner, Circle K, formerly Topaz, is offering members of the public a chance to win free tickets to the match at their ‘Circle K Grand Opening’ days, which will be taking place around the county over the summer months

Speaking about the part- nership, Derek Nolan, Senior Director of Retail Operations at Circle K Ireland said: ‘By partnering with the Wicklow Hospice for the European legends match in September, we are getting behind a superb organisati­on who have worked tirelessly fundraisin­g to build a 15-bed hospice for the people of Co Wicklow.

‘We look forward to welcoming them to our Circle K grand opening events in Wicklow over the coming weeks.’

Tickets for the match, which takes place at Carlisle Grounds in Bray at 3 p.m. on September 15, are €10

Other options include a VIP lunch meet and greet with the players; Legend’s experience which includes lunch, time on the pitch during the game and getting your memorabili­a signed; black tie dinner with the soccer players, and the total package which includes all options.
