A stroll in the park for Avondale

AVONDALE ST PATRICK’S 5-15 1-05

AS the scoreline might suggest, Avondale were never troubled in this Intermediate hurling clash with St Patrick’s played in Aughrim on Sunday night.

The Dales, just down from Senior ranks, are giving every indication that their stay in the second tier of Wicklow hurling will be short lived.

At no stage were they troubled by their Wicklow town opponents, who failed to score in the opening twenty five minutes of this game.

Avondale had 3-10 on the board at this stage but points from Christy Moorehouse, John O’Brien and Kevin Cody had St. Patrick’s off the mark in the final five minutes coming up to half-time.

Shane Byrne, Eamon Kearns, Paul Gahan, Niall Heffernan, Eugene Dunne, Danny and Eanna Owens and Karl Phelan were very prominent in that first half for Avondale and helped to ensure that they went into the half-time break leading by 3-10 to 0-3.

The Dales brought on four subs at the interval. While Avondale still won the second half of the game by 2-5 to 1-2, the game was more evenly contested and St Pat’s came far more into the game.

John O’Brien and Christy Moorehouse added points but they found it difficult to beat Ray Nolan in the Avondale goal.

They did eventually get the goal they deserved when Michael Moorehouse sent a great shot to the net with less than five minutes left on the clock.

While the tempo of the game dropped off in the second half, goals from Eamon Kearns and Craig Byrne ensured that Avondale stayed comfortably ahead and they ran out winners in the end on a scoreline of 5-15 to 1-5.

Scorers - Avondale: Eamon Kearns 2-6, Eanna Owens 1-2, Paul Gahan 1-1, Craig Byrne 1-1, Karl Phelan 0-2, Liam Phelan 0-1, Dean Gahan 0-1, Shane Byrne 0-1.

St Patrick’s: Christy Moore- house 0-2, Michael Moorehouse 1-0, John O’Brien 0-2, Kevin Cody 0-1.
