ENNISKERRY HISTORY SOCIETY

Meetings of the Enniskerry History Society, which meets under the guidance of its president John Callan, have now concluded and will resume in October when the autumn 2018 programme will take place, and planning on this is currently under way.

MEALS ON WHEELS SERVICE

The Meals on Wheels service which operates in Enniskerry and Kilmacanog­ue, delivers hot meals every Tuesday and Thursday to older people in their homes. We are looking for volunteer drivers who can give up two or three hours twice a month to facilitate this much needed service. ENNISKERRY WALKING ASSOCIATIO­N

The Enniskerry Walking Associatio­n was formed in 2004 to protect traditiona­l walking routes in the area and to promote walking for recreation, for health, as a safe alternativ­e to car use, and to help us all to learn more about our locality. Our popular Tuesday evening walks usually meet at the Spar in Enniskerry at 7 p.m. Saturday walks meet at 1.30 p.m. All, who are interested, adults or children, are most welcome. Walks vary in length but most last between one-and-a half and two-and-a-half hours; some (but not all) involve a bit of climbing. This coming Tuesdays Walk is: Bohernabre­ena Reservoir Walk. Meet Outside at Spar at 7 p.m. or Bohernabre­ena Reservoir car park at 7.30 p.m. – Flat – two hours duration. Feel free just to turn up (sharp) on any of the Tuesday walks. The August First Saturday Book Sale, which supports the Shankill Old Folks Associatio­n, will take place in the Shankill Old Folks Centre, Lower Road, Shankill, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 4, so make a point of calling into it during that Saturday morning and avail of the opportunit­y to pick up some excellent reading material for the summer. Donations of books, which must be in a good and clean condition, other than school/text books, will be accepted on the day. A book written by local author Séamus Murphy, who died in 2015 called ‘Having It Away’ A story of Freedom, Friendship and IRA Jailbreak’ is now available from the Town Hall Bookshop. This book tells the story of his escape from Wakefield Prison in Brian in the 1950s where he was serving a term of long imprisonme­nt as a participan­t in the raid on the Arbourfiel­d arms depot. With the assistance of other Republican­s and members of EOKA, he managed to escape and return to Ireland.

This book tells the story of his time in prison and escape and return to Ireland. In August the Society’s 44th summer Series of Evening Lectures will take place in Rathmichae­l National School, Stonebridg­e Road, Shankill, at 8 p.m. nightly from Monday, August 13, to Friday, August 17.

SHANKILL GAA CLUB

The juvenile Academy Sponsored by O’Donnell’s Pharmacy is taking a summer break and will resume activities in early August at 10 a.m. on Saturdays in Stonebridg­e Road, Shankill. Our older teams members should check with their team manager for summer training times and other and activities. There was no jackpot winner in last Sunday week’s ‘Chase the Ace’ draw in Brady’s – the €50 prize went David Sully. Last week’s jackpot was €600. Tickets are €2 each or three for €5.

College was a brilliant success. With approximat­ely 200 boys and girls attending and the beautiful sunshine everyone had a great time learning new skills of Hurling, Football and camogie enjoying games and even organising their own song concert.

Steve Davis, our GPO, was the camp director and was assisted by Dublin super stars Molly Lamb, Conor Mullally, Emma McDonagh, Aoife Kane, Sinéad O’Donoghue and Alan McHugh, together with our own young adult coaching assistants who have been with us from the start.

Dublin footballer Con O’Callaghan dropped in for the medal ceremony which was great.

BLESSINGS OF GRAVES IN ST COLUMCILLE’S HOSPITAL,

Was held last Saturday at afternoon in the former Famine Cemetery at which the hospital chaplains Ms Marianne Quinn, Fr Patrick McGlanagh, Rev John Tannerm, who were joined by Fr John O’Connell, SAC, PP, St Anne’s Parish, Shankill, and Fr Twohig, SAC, officiated. The ceremony included readings by Ms Linda O’Leary, manager, St Columcille’s Hospital and Ms Marianne Quinn, The act of remembranc­e by Fr McGlanaghy in which candles were for the adults and children who died, concluding with an Anointing for the Healing of Hurts and Final Blessing.
