MEN’S SHED

Action from the Men’s Shed in Killadreenan sees the members ever busy in the allotments during the last few weeks, with lots of veggies needing tender loving care, especially now in this beautiful but scorching sunshine plants are kinda suffering, beetroot and onion in particular seem wanting to give up.

In our newly sponsored polytunnel, tomatoes are begining to redden at last, watched by green and red peppers, while baby pumpkins stare out from under their broad leaves to get a look at the action, the coming and going of members busily tending to all their needs, without being a spoilsport we must make a wish for a little rain at this time, as all our stored rain (captured from the roof) is almost gone, but aren’t we all enjoying the great sunshine anyway. Members have just completed the construction of a large garden shed as a project for our neighbours St Cathrine’s respite home, and duly delivered same early last week followers of our popular Facebook page would have seen pictures of the shed in the home’s garden, well done to all the members who put many hours into it’s construction. In conjuction with the Tidy Towns members are nearing completion of restoring an old style public phonebox (again pictures on Facebook page) which will eventually be located in the village as an item of historical interest.

July 21 is this coming Saturday and we at Newtown and Newcastle Men’s Shed extend a welcome to all within our community and surrounds to join us at midday to a community open lookabout day, where tea, sandwiches, burgers, and most important of all items made at the shed by the members, Bird nesting boxes, Bat nesting boxes, garden novelty items such as wheelbarrows, mushrooms, etc, await you. So pencil in that morning and spend an hour or two getting to know what a Men’s Shed brings to your community, we guarantee you won’t be disappointed, see you there.

NEWTOWN JUNIORS FC

Just a mention of a few exJuniors, who over this past weekend made their bow at national level. On Saturday in Greystones the home side played UCD Waves in the first game ever in the girls’ under-17 National League. On the Greystones team were Kerryann Hamilton and Niamh Caffrey while Ciara Dease lined out for Waves. Waves won the game 3-1 (Kerryann scoring the Greystones goal). Then on Sunday in Belfield UCD took on Kilkenny in the Senior WNL and they had to come from behind to win the game 2-1 with the winning goal coming from Amy Guilfoyle on her full debut. Making her first start in goal for UCD was Lucie Ashmore. Well done girls keep up the good work.
