Prison gardens showcased to public

-

SHELTON Abbey open centre welcomed members of the community to its gardens for an open day recently in aid of Wicklow Hospice.

The showcase was a well attended affair as local historian Pat Power gave talks and tours of the gardens and grounds throughout the afternoon. The Shelton Abbey prisoners Men’s Shed were involved in making the event a success and a number of items produced by the group were on sale to the public on the day including breads, honey, flowers, plant pots, picnic tables and bird tables. This was a unique opportunity for locals to see the historical building and beautiful gardens which have not been accessible to the public for more than a quarter of a century. Many people that visited had connections to the Abbey having had family work there in previous ownership. Governor Kathy Hoctor thanked the staff and prisoners who supported the initiative.
