Wicklow pair help Ireland to Tetrathlon success
TWO Wicklow athletes helped the Irish Pony Club Senior Tetrathlon team to an historic victory at the USPC International Championships recently.
Tim O’Brien (Shillelagh Pony Club/Parnell AC and Asgard SC) and Blessington’s Jack Sargent were the Wicklow pair involved while Avoca’s Tim also took silver as the overall individual boy.
Members of the Irish Pony Club Senior Tetrathlon Team travelled to the US for the USPC International Championships in Tryon, North Carolina, USA. Competing were teams from the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland.
The Irish Senior boys and girls team took gold and silver respectively in the three-day competition.
The competition was run over three days as follows:
Day one (July 27): Showjumping followed by 10m ISSF Target Pistol shooting competition
Day 2: Swimming (200 yards) followed by seconnd Showjumping round
Day 3: Cross country 3k race. The teams consist of four members with the best three scores counting.
Tim O’Brien also holds the title of National Champion in Modern Pentathlon in his age category and has represented Ireland in Modern Pentathlon both home and abroad.
While eagerly awaiting his Leaving Certificate results he hopes to study at UCD where he has been offered a place on the Ad Astra High Performance Sports program where he hopes to continue his Pentathlon training.
