Well done to all involved with our under-11 footballers who had a busy week with two teams out on Wednesday evening. Full time scores: U11 Football Division 1: St Patrick’s 0-36, Éiré Óg Greystones 0-18 and under-11 football Group 3: St Patrick’s 0-49, Newtown GAA 0-18.

Well done to our own Mark Evans who performed well with the county under-15s at the weekend.

The county under-15’ competed in the first series of games in the Alan Mangan Tournament in Offaly on Saturday afternoon with three games of twenty minute halves so over 140 minutes of football was played.

A comprehensive win against Leitrim in the first game was followed a comfortable win over Wexford (2) in the second game.

In the final game against Fermanagh the lads were seven points up with just 10 minutes left to play but conceded three goals in a five minute period and were unlucky then not to get an equaliser in the last minute with the opposition keeper pulling off unbelievable save.

However, there was many positives to take from today, this group of guys have shown excellent application over the past month in particular and the future is bright for this group.

Our ‘Little Warriors’ will continue on Saturdays at 10am for boys and girls age 4-6. Fun games, getting to meet new friends and learning new skills, are what our nursery is all about. We look forward to welcoming those back from last year and meeting our new recruits!

ÉIRE ÓG GREYSTONES

Our senior footballers were very much the underdogs going into their game against Hollywood in the opening round of the Renault Senior Championship in Joule Park on Saturday.

Hollywood came to Aughrim with an impressive CV, they were Division 1 league winners while Éire Óg had not had a stand-out presence in Division 1A. Further our cause was not helped by the absence of a number of key personnel which included county player Stephen ‘Chester’ Kelly.

The early stages of the match rendered substance to this assessment as Hollywood had run up a score of 1-02 before Éire Óg got on the scoreboard with a point. A little score for Éire Óg but a score which had a huge effect on the trend of the game.

Up to that all the indications were of a very bad day at the office for our lads. As it turned out the score steadied the Clocha Liatha ship and the threatened deluge did not transpire. In fact the game thereafter settled into a more or less tit for tat contest with the score difference hovering around the five-point mark until the final whistle.

In the end, Éire Óg lost by four points which shows that the opposition gained no ground after the initial 1-2 surge.

There is no denying that the men from the west were worthy winners but our lads, once they had overcome the initial shock of Hollywood’s scoring spree, showed that the difference between the teams was exaggerated by the final score.

The disparity in league status between the teams obviously worked to Clocha Liatha’s disadvantage.

Their approach lacked the sharpness which would have been gained by playing against the better teams in Division 1 while Hollywood did have this experience and this was reflected in their play; they were livelier in their engagement, quicker in their reaction and they moved the ball with more purpose.

Their superior qualities in these areas gave Hollywood a distinct advantage with respect to the gaining of possession of the breaking ball in the middle third where their return was well above 50 per cent.

The team’s next championship outing is against Bray Emmets in Newtown on Friday next at 7.45p.m.

Éire Óg’s Junior C team played their opening game in the Arklow Bay Hotel Championship Thursday evening against Barndarrig in Barndarrig and, mirabile dictu, came away with a convincing win. A glance at the team sheet would convince one that John Wynne and his management team must be in line for an archaeological prize as they had to dig deep into the history of the club to unearth some of the members of the squad.

The team had a solid run in the league and this helped to bring some coherence to what one might describe as a disparate group of players.

Our lads took some time to establish where exactly the goalposts were positioned and had registered five wides before they succeeded in putting the ball between them. After that they became much more clinical and had added 1-8 by the break to put themselves in an unassailable position.

Éire Óg dominance continued into the second period and they put a further 2-2 on the scoreboard before the final whistle.

In what was a very commendable team performance the contributions of Kurt Starke, Willie O’Hagan, Gary Dunne, Dermot Blake and Andy Kealy deserve special mention.

Captain Willie O’Hagan was at his megaphonic best in his urgings of his troops to greater effort. In fairness to Willie his words of encouragement were not empty as he led very much by example.

IOMÁINT - The juniors are fixed to play Glenealy this Wednesday in Glenealy at 7.30p.m. and the seniors are scheduled to play Kiltegan at 7.30p.m. on Tuesday, August 7, in Blessington.
