Tullow show success for sheep breeders

TULLOW Sheep Breeders Associatio­n held their annual pairs night recently which was a great success with over 22 pairs of ewe lambs and over 20 pairs of Suffolk-cross hogget ewes presented for showing.

The Cheviot classes were also strongly supported on the night.

The evening showcased all that is good and exceptiona­l about the Suffolk Cheviot cross breeding with the Suffolk ram and the Wicklow Cheviot being the maternal strengths to the breed.

The Sheep Breeders’ Committee noted that they were preparing for their 31st annual show and sale in Tullow. It’s a tremendous success for any breed society to be building and showcasing 31 years of sheep production in the the south east of Ireland.

The winners were as follows: Best Pair of Suffolk Cheviot x Ewe Lambs – first, Laurence Murphy, second, David and Dylan Leybourne, third, Peter Behan, fourth Sean Ryan. Best Pair of Suffolk Cheviot x Hoggett Ewes – first, Ben Fenton, second, David and Dylan Leybourne, third, David and Dylan Leybourne, fourth John Driver. Best Pair of Cheviot Ewe Lambs: first, John Driver, second, Charles Fenton, third, Laurence Murphy. Best Pair of Cheviot Hogget Ewes – first, Peter Behan, second, David and Dylan Leybourne, third, John Driver.

Chairman John Nolan thanked all the exhibitors for bringing sheep on the evening to the show and also reminded the people that entries were now open for the 31st show and sale which takes place on Wednesday, August 8, in Tullow Mart and also that the second show and sale for the year will be held on Wednesday, August 29, and the third sale, on Wednesday, September 12. This will include the Cheviot Show and Sale.

SHEEP SALE JULY 7: An improved trade for fat heavy lambs of €1-€3 per head and store lambs improved by €3€4. Some top quality suffolk cross hogget ewes making €130-€170.

Hoggets: 40kg–€85; 43kg– €92; 45kg–€99; 48kg–€103; 50kg–€105; 65kg–€112.

The 34th annual Baltinglas­s ewe sheep breeders show and sale will take place on Saturday August 4.

SHEEP SALES REPORT - TUESDAY JULY 24: A total of 1,268 sheep on offer. Very little change in the trade for fat lambs or store lambs.

Butcher Lambs €109 to €112 or €57 to €66 over €/kg; Factory Lambs €90 to €108 or €52 to €63 over €/kg; Store Lambs €70 to €88 or €36 to €50 over €/kg; Fat Ewes €90 to €110 per head; Feeding Ewes €55 to €88 per head; Suffolk x Breeding Hoggets €157 to €175 per head.

CATTLE SALES REPORT - THURSDAY JULY 26: A total of 268 cattle and 22 calves on offer. Trade remains similar as per the last number of weeks.

Beef & Forward Store Bullocks €550 to €885 over €/kg; Store Bullocks over 500kgs €480 to €740 over €/kg; Store Bullocks over 400kgs €420 to €580 over €/kg; Store Bullocks over 300kgs €300 to €480 over €/kg; Store Heifers over 400kgs €360 to €535 over €/kg; Store Heifers over 300Kgs €280 to €420 over €/ kg; Beef and Butcher Heifers €420 to €680 over €/kg; Beef Cows €200 to €380 over €/kg; Feeding Cows €/kg to €200 over €/kg.

Calves: Fr Bulls €80 to €150 per head; HE/AA Bulls €120 to €250 per head; HE/ AA Heifers €80 to €180 per head; Continenta­l Bulls €180 to €340 per head; Continenta­l Heifers €140 to €260 per head.

SHEEP SALE JULY 26: A total of 2,150 sheep on offer met an improved trade for all classes with stronger factory and store demand. Exporters were active for ram lambs.

Lambs: Butcher lambs €102 – €108; 45 – 49kg €94 – €105; 40 – 44kg €83 – €96; 35 – 39kg €69 – €85; 30 – 34kg €68 – €82; Ewe lambs €75 - €110; Cull Ewes €50 – €116.

Breeding Ewes: Hoggetts €120 - €140; Older breeding ewes €80 – €120.

CATTLE SALE JULY 28: Large entry with 560 Cattle & 50 Calves on offer. Prices similar to last week with little change – more farmer customers for store cattle after rain fall – strong export demand for weanling bulls
