GOLF SOCIETY OUTING

Jacobs Well Golf Society played its fifth event of the 2018 season at Rathsallagh Golf and Country Club, Dunlavin on Saturday, July 28.

As usual the society was warmly received by the club but the same was not true of the weather. Like most other parts of the country Rathsallagh did not escape torrential rain and hailstones during the morning. Consequently the front nine was a big challenge for all the players but we persevered and luckily the weather held for the back nine. There was a respectable turn out of 14 members on the day. Clearly the weather had an impact on scores which were a bit lower that we have seen on previous outings.

The winner of the Category 1 section was Cormac Redmond with 36 points and Tom Donnelly won the Category 2 section with 28 points. Larry Roe was best on the front 9 with 17 points and Harry Connell took the back 9 with 15 points. Alex Sheehan had the longest drive on the day. Prizes for ‘nearest the pin’ on the Par 3 holes were awarded to Caroline Browne, Alex Sheehan and Cormac Redmond. Prizes were presented at the club by chairman Artie Byrne. Special thanks to Mick Leonard for organising the event on the day.

The Society’s next and final outing of this season takes place on Sunday, August 26, at Bunclody Golf Club (first Tee off 10.30) when we look forward to another day out.

THURSDAY WALKS

Last week took us to Old Downs Hill in Kilpedder where 36 walkers completed a lovely 2.5 hr loop in sunshine. Amazing panoramas were seen from Dublin Bay and Howth down the east coast and back to Turlough Hill and more besides. The only downside was a constant plague of flies although one enterprising walker may have started a new item of fashion as she smiled out as us for the evening from under a wide brimmed hat complete with fly proof net.

This week takes us to Trooperstown Hill. meeting as usual in Parnell Memorial Park for 7 p.m. and walk start at 7.20.
