The thrift shop at the Pavilion, Rednagh Road will be open on Sunday next, August 5, from 10 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. Come along and browse the many books toys clothes and bric-à-brac items available.

LOTTO

The numbers 1, 3, 7 and 11 were drawn in the sports club lotto on Monday last July 23The jackpot was won by Mary and Mikey Murray, c/o J O’T; matchthree winners were Des Fitzgerald, Brendan Barnes, Sharon Byrne and Sheila Keogh. The jackpot is €1,500.

FISHING COMPETITIO­N

There will be a fishing competitio­n at the NDAF ‘Fishing for All’ Angling Facility, Rednagh Road, Aughrim on Monday, August 6, from midday to 3 p.m. Prizes – Plaques and Fishing Vouchers for heaviest senior catch of the day and junior catch of the day. WMOF ART EXHIBITION

The Church of the Sacred Heart in Aughrim now has the art exhibits for the World Meeting of families art exhibition, titled ‘Family Life in Ireland’ on display in our church.

MARKET

HAITI MISSION

Our target of €6,000 was reached at the coffee morning on Saturday. Thank you to all who sponsored, supported, donated and worked during the year to build up the fund, which will be used to provide a home for a severely handicappe­d young woman. We will present Sister Ann with the money raised which is a great help to her as she shows love and care to those who are in real need.

BALLOON BURST

Tickets are still on sale for the Balloon Burst on Monday, August 6, at 5 p.m. in Murphy’s Hotel Tinahely, with two prizes of €250 and many more prizes, tickets €5, all proceeds towards the Robert Nolan recovery fund, many thanks to everyone for their support to date.

TINAHELY WALKS

On August 12 the walk is in Avoca – Grade B, 17km, 4.5 hours. Meeting in Tinahely at 10 a.m. or Avoca at 10.30. On August 19 the walk is at Coolmeelag­h Loop – Grade B, 12km, three hours. Meeting at Carnew Mart at 10.30 a.m. As usual, remember to bring food, proper footwear, appropriat­e clothing.

KILRUSH DRAMA GROUP

The Canadian visitors, his Excellancy Kevin Vickers (Canadian Ambassador to Ireland) and all of the people who attended Kilrush Drama Group’s production of ‘Flight to Grosse Ile’ were treated to a moving and emotional night of drama in St Brigid’s Hall on both Thursday and Friday nights July 19 and 20.

The play was written by Nenagh schoolteac­her, Jim Minogue and deals with various aspects of the Great Famine of the 1840s. The production which was directed by Michael Byrne received high accolades from all who attended. The large cast included members aged from seven years to 85 and each and every cast member played an important role in the success of the production.

There were many outstandin­g individual performanc­es in the play including stunning performanc­es by four of the lead characters who were played by Kate Power, Timmy Connaughto­n, Jimmy Spellacy and Brendan Doyle.

The cast were also delighted to be joined by Jim Minogue’s wife and sons who travelled from Nenagh on Friday night, and also by members of the 1997 All-Ire- land winning cast of ‘Flight to Grosse Ile’ who travelled to see the play both on Thursday and Friday nights.

‘MY FAIR LADY’

Carnew Musical Society will present ‘My Fair Lady’ in St Brigid’s Hall from November 26 to December 1 next. One of the all time favourite shows, My Fair Lady is a musical based on George Bernard Shaw’s Pygmalion, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe.

This will be Carnew Musical Society’s second time to do the show, having performed it before in 1994. The production team for the show are Director: Michael Dunbar, Musical Director: Lar Duffy and Choreograp­her: Frances Ryan.

Cast: Eliza Doolittle will be played by Joanne Logue and Henry Higgins will be played by Rory Robinson; Seán Hallahan, who played Higgins in the 1994 production will play Colonel Pickering and John Young will play Alfred P Doolittle. Mrs Higgins and Mrs Pearse will be played by Jennifer Byrne and Mandie O’Keeffe while Professor Zoltan Karpathy will be played by Malcolm Byrne and Freddy Eynsfort Hill will be played by Pádraig D’Arcy. Mrs Eynsfort Hill will be played by Eileen Tormey McCabe and Harry and Jamie will be played by Paul Doran and Jimmy Spellacy.

Rehearsals will commence on Tuesday, September 4.
