Greystones Rowing Club held their 2018 regatta last Saturday afternoon at the marina.

There was a fantastic day of rowing, with clubs joining Greystones from far and wide to compete in a series of competitions. The teams enjoyed glorious weather as they tore through the sea aboard their boats.

Competitors of all ages took to the water, with categories including senior men and ladies, under 18 girls and boys, novices, inters, mixed and more.

The club got their new premises at the harbour last year, after decades of functioning out of two fisherman’s huts, and continue to grow and develop.

The club was founded in 1920 and now boasts more than 100 kayakers and 50 rowers.

Joe Sweeney is their oldest member. Bernard Byrne is their oldest and long- est dedicated participating member, and he is at the clubhouse most days at various times.

Normally the rowing season runs from March up to the August bank holiday weekend.

Indoor training in the gym continues throughout the year, as well as a good measure of socialising.

The age in the club for kayaking is from nine years upwards, and for rowing it’s 12 years and upwards.
