Wicklow C.C.C. review two separate incidents
DECISIONS were expected today (Wednesday) from Wicklow’s C.C.C. on the punishments for those involved in two separate brawls at GAA games last weekend in the county.
The C.C.C. met last night to review the referees’ reports from the IFC meetings of Rathnew and Ashford in Joule Park Aughrim on Saturday evening and Laragh and Donard-The Glen in Hollywood on Sunday evening and video evidence was also due to be utilised in the search for culprits.
A strike on a Rathnew player on the ground was believed to be what started the brawl during the IFC game in Aughrim. The game was in the second half and finely balanced when members of both teams and some individuals from the sideline became involved in a fracas. Kicks and boxes were donated freely to the swarm of bodies with several players being knocked to the ground.
Referee Kieran O’Shea consulted with his linesmen when the relatively brief incident had been resolved and he issued five red cards, three to Rathnew, two to Ashford, and the game continued to its conclusion with Rathnew winning well in the end.
In Hollywood, Laragh had just recorded a fine victory over Donard-The Glen when, immediately following the final whistle, it is reported that a Laragh supporter passed a comment in front of the Donard-The Glen dug-out. A brief melee arose which was soon calmed down and the issue was resolved with players and mentors said to have shaken hands as they left the field.
The incident in Aughrim could have devastating consequences for the championship ambitions of both the Rathnew and Ashford teams should suspensions arise.
Appeals are expected to be lodged and Wicklow GAA are set to hear these before the weekend.
