Third world crown for Chris McCabe

Newtown native wins gold

-

NEWTOWN native Chris McCabe became world champion for the third time last weekend when he won gold in the Senior Male Welter Weight Sparring Division at the ITF World Championships in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

McCabe’s victory makes him a three-time world champion (2014 Rome, 2016 Brighton, 2018 Buenos Aires) and the Newtown man and head coach at East Coast TKD also scooped the bronze medal in the Senior Male 6th Degree Patterns.

McCabe had four extremely tough fights in the Sparring, against Argentina, Spain, Japan and Argentina in the final.

‘We are all extremely proud and excited for him after all the work put into preparing for this World Event. #thisis50 #3isthemagicnumber #stillslaying,’ wrote a club spokesperson on the East Coast TKD Facebook page after the win.

‘Chris McCabe takes bronze in the Senior Male 6th Degree Patterns at the ITF World Championships in Buenos Aires after defeating Russia and Canada to get to the quarter-finals, but unfortunately lost to the exceptional and current world champion, Kevin McCabe from Wales,’ they added.

Wicklow were also represented by Emmet Carey who claimed the bronze medal in the very competitive Junior Male U18s Micro Weight Sparring at the ITF World Championships.

Carey put in a lot of hard work and faced a very tough opponent to secure third in the world.
