SO MUCH GOING ON AROUND THE COUNTY!

- By MARY FOGARTY

A WEALTH of activities have been lined up in County Wicklow for National Heritage Week, which kicks off on Saturday, August 18, and runs over nine days until August 26.

The majority of local events are freeof-charge and family-friendly.

The Heritage Office of Wicklow County Council has produced a pocket-sized guide outlining the 60-plus events taking place in the county and it was officially launched in the Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh, last Thursday by Cllr Pat Vance, cathaoirleach of Wicklow County Council.

‘ The busy programme of events planned for County Wicklow is hugely positive and shows the high regard that Wicklow people have for their local history, nature and cultural heritage. Heritage Week is a fabulous opportunity to showcase what we have to offer, and I would encourage everyone to participate and to connect with their local heritage,’ said Cllr Vance.

Launched at the same event was ‘Monastic Mappery’, an exhibition curated by the Glendalough Heritage Forum examining how the Glendalough Valley has been depicted in maps over the last four centuries.

Some of the events scheduled for Heritage Week include nature walks and workshops, opportunities to participate in an archaeological dig, history talks, whale watching, mining hikes, nature detective walk for chil- dren, junior archaeology and reviving the old tradition of the Mass Rock.

The County Wicklow Heritage Week guide is available to pick up at libraries and tourist offices or can be posted out to individuals if they send an email request to dburns@wicklowcoco.ie.

The guide is designed to highlight Wicklow activities and should be used in conjunction with the www. heritageweek.ie website for details on all events and activities.
