Avondale’s Intermediate hurlers took on our near neighbours Glenealy on Wednesday evening in round four of the Intermediate championship and ran out very comfortable winners on a scoreline of Avondale 6-18, Glenealy 0-9.

We were always on top in this game with Ray Nolan giving an exhibition at full-forward scoring 3-09. It was a good solid team performance which keeps up top of our group with two games left to play.

Senior footballers beat Éire Óg on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-9 in a crucial game in their Senior championship group on Saturday evening.

Two goals just before half-time from Ross Ward and David Baker gave us a five-point lead which we never gave up.

Scorers were Ross Ward and David Baker (1-0 each), Oisin McGraynor and Sean McGraynor (0-3 points each), Conor Byrne and Dean Gahan (0-2 each).

We now play Hollywood and Bray over the next four weeks for a chance to make the quarter-finals.

There was a little treat for the under-13 hurlers Monday evening after training.

Every session they have, their touch is improving, their confidence is building and their club is so proud that they are working so hard facing adversities every step of the way. Enough to put a grown man off sport.

But these lads keep coming back week after week.

Under-11 footballers has a very good run out last week against the under-13s.

Our next game is away to Michael Dwyers next Wednesday.

Training continues every Friday from 6-7pm.

Well done to our under-7 and 9 footballers who played in the Go Games in the complex on Friday night against Ashford, Enniskerry, and Rathnew.

The skill and determination of all the kids is a joy to watch as they continuously improve each week.

Would like to thank our two young referees Kevin Kinsella and Zach Cullen along with the parents that helped in any capacity to make it a successful evening.

Best of luck to all the boys and girls who started the Cúl Camps in the complex on Monday for the week.

We are looking for as many juveniles to come out on Wednesday evening at 7pm to help assist the Tidy Towns committee to help clean up the town. Rathdrum has been nominated for the Pride of place award so it’s important that we all pull together as a community on this.

All Avondale juveniles from under-13 are having a fun day out in Clara Lara this Saturday after having the Cúl Camps all week.

Avondale under-7 and 9s have a hurling Go Games this Friday evening in the complex. Please be there for 6.45pm.

There will be no Academy on Saturday, due to the fun day out in Clara Lara.

BALLYMANUS

The lads chalked up another championship win last weekend when they defeated Ashford on a scoreline 1-11 to 0-3.

We couldn’t break down a resolute Ashford defence in the first half, not helped by running into cul de sacs and wayway passes.

The second half was somewhat better. We chalked up 1-7 and kept Ashford scoreless. Definitely things to work on, but good to keep the momentum going before we face Donard in the next round the week after next.

There was no lotto jackpot winner from 16, 21, 22, and 24 last week and only one match three winner - Catherine Harper.

Finally, the club would like to thank the Carthy/Dornan family for their kind donation to the juveniles last weekend. Much appreciated.

ANNACURRA

This Sunday, August 19, is La Le Club. There is a parade from the church to the field at 11.30.

Once in the field there are lots of under age games. Then the Ciaran Shannon trophy will take place between current and past Annacurra players.

The day will end with the duck race in the river.

Please support the day and we will have you home in time for the All-Ireland hurling final.

SHILLELAGH

Disapointment for the Junior A football team who lost out by a four-point margin to Kilbride/Lacken in the Junior A football championship Rd. 3 in Baltinglass on Sunday last, our championship ambitions are to say the least now hanging by a thread and our last group game versus neighbours Coolboy is shaping up to be a winner takes all encounter.

The combination drawn in the club lotto draw on Tuesday, August 7, was 9, 15, 21, and 23.

The jackpot remains elusive. Also, no participant managed to match 3 numbers’ the following lucky dip winners shared €100: Jane Kenny, Oakridge, Mary Byrne, Deerpark, and Paddy Myers, Carnew. Patrick Hennessey won the promoters prize.

ÉIRE ÓG GREYSTONES

Unfortunately all has not been going well for our senior footballers and after two close defeats, but defeats nevertheless, they are teetering on the edge of a loss of senior status.

Hollywood put us to the sword in the first round while it was Bray Emmets’ turn in the second round game in Newtown on Saturday week.

Bray, like ourselves, had stumbled at the first hurdle so a loss for either would place it in a precarious position with respect to the descent into the intermediate ranks.

So the match had a winner take all ring about it and overall it did provide the excitement that this entailed.

At the end of 10 minutes the teams were level, two points each, all the scores having come from frees. It took 12 minutes for the first score from play to arrive, a point for Bré.

During the following 10 minutes Bré’s inside forwards were giving our full-back line a torrid time and succeeded in opening a two-point gap.

It could have been much more but for an outstanding save from goalie Billy Norman.

However despite Billy’s best efforts Bré had added two goals before there were 18 minutes on the clock and were threatening to leave our lads well behind. Suddenly Éire Óg was back in contention. A speculative ball into the goalmouth was batted away by the Bré defence in the direction of the inrushing Daniel Keane who, David Clifford-like lashed it first time to the back of the net. The score at the interval was 3-6 to1-5.

Éire Óg continued to live dangerously in the second half and were saved from disaster on a number of occasions by the goalkeeping of Billy Norman.

In the last quarter one of the Bré midfielders received a second yellow but it is debatable whether this had any bearing on the Éire Óg unanswered points which followed.

Much of the last few minutes which were played out close to the Bré goals could be labelled for Éire Óg as a period of lost opportunities.

A ball accurately delivered to the goalmouth area was punched to the net by Daniel Wood and this left Greystones just a goal behind with two minutes and injury time to play.

In the remaining period Éire Óg were afforded at least two excellent chances of an equaliser but a lack of experience and cutting edge saw these opportunities go a-begging.

PEIL NA MBAN - After their defeat in the first round of the championship at the hands of An Tochar the fortunes of our adult ladies took a turn for the better on Thursday with an 11-07 to 5-08 win over neighbours Newtown.

League form would have installed Éire Óg as firm favourites so it was not at all surprising that they were firmly in the driving seat, 3-1 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. The goals were supplied by Megan Healy, Rachel Purcell and Ellie O’Neill and the point by Maedhbh Deeney.

At this juncture Newtown came more into the game and showed that they were not going to concede defeat without a fight and chalked up 2-5 before the break.

In the early stages of the second half Newtown had the Éire Óg goals under siege but their return was kept to a minimum by the great goalkeeping of Ciara Patrick and the solid defending of Sinéad Kelly, Orla O’Doherty, Shauna Dillane, Wendela Zeigers and Eva Moore.

Katie Lawless played the role of a roving half-forward and helped to channel a lot of good ball out of defence, and Claudia Randals controlled much of the play in the middle third.

Elaina Fusciardi amassed a total of five goals while Rachel Purcell added three. Ellie O’Neill scored two and Maedhbh Deeney accounted for the other. Player of the Match was Megan Healy.

AUGHRIM

Our second match in the Junior A championship did not take place last weekend as St. Pats have withdrawn from the competition.

We are fixed to play Rathnew in the next round on this Friday evening August 24 in Newtown at 7.30pm.

A win against Rathnew would see us through to the knockout stage of the championship.

Please come along and support on Friday next as this will be a tough assignment against an experienced Rathnew team however if we approach this game with the same determination and commitment that we showed against Kilcoole we can progress.

TINAHELY

Lotto numbers: 3, 18, 22, and 26. Bonus: 5. There was no jackpot winner. There were three match threes: Jamie Cullen, Deirdre Tyrrell, and Harry Ellis. Next week’s lotto: €8,900.

At our recent Intermediate championship match we found out that there was only one linesman to officiate with the referee. There were no umpires.

This is a very poor situation from the County Board. Teams are training for months for their big day on championship and then no officials turn up.

Having to ask supporters from both clubs to umpire and do the line is not a fair way. This has to be addressed at County Board level

Intermediate Football - The intermediate team were out last Sunday against Balinacor in round 2 of the championship in Pearse’s Park Arklow. Played in warm conditions we soon found our feet and got going. At half-time the score was Tinahely 3-7, Balinacor 0-7.

The three goals were superbly taken and also bandy pulled off some excellent saves for us in goal. Tinahely continued in the second half and scored another nine points to Balinacors 1-2.

It was nice to see such a large bench togged out and the introduction of four players in the last five minutes under the age of 23 years really tells you about the youth coming through. Full time score was Tinahely 2-16, Balinacor 1-9.

Next up is Dunlavin this Friday night at 7.15pm in Joule Park Aughrim. See you there on the night

Junior Football - The Junior team had no competitive match this week. Tonight (Wednesday) they take on St Patrick’s Tullow at 8.20pm in a challenge match away. Next Thursday, August 26, is our final game in the group stages. We play Annacurra at home at 7.30pm
